Conservative columnist Ann Coulter has been replaced with conservative columnist Michelle Malkin.

Erie Times-News Editorial Page Editor Bryan Oberle sums it up best when he says Coulter simply did not meet our standards. We gave the always controversial syndicated columnist a year on the op-ed page — an election year at that — opposite outspoken liberal columnist Molly Ivins. But Coulter, it seemed, did not only not meet basic standards for excellence in writing and commentary, but seemingly met no journalistic standards for civility. Apparently, the vitriolic Coulter has none.

"It was with great reluctance we turned over the column space to Ann Coulter," Oberle said. "We understand she already had a loyal following, but her columns are more exercises in grenade-throwing than column-writing. There is a mean-spirited tone that dominates all her columns." Looking back, Oberle said, "The final straw came during the election when she attacked triple amputee Max Cleland, stating so matter-of-factly that he wasn't a war hero but was instead some sort of fraud. Enough is enough."

There's plenty more to say about Coulter — her description of Muslims as smelly, her shrill hatred of all Americans who do not agree with her, and perhaps her most infamous comment shortly after 9/11 that "we should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity."

Coulter is beyond any possible credible defense, but she remains popular because she voices the mindless hate that permeates our sad, sick society. This hate is kept stoked because it is useful in keeping people distracted and easily manipulated by the blivet** administration.

I welcome hearing that Coulter has been kicked out, but it sounds like this is only at a single one of the many newspapers that run her columns, the Erie Times-News. Is this correct? But Michelle Malkin is an apologist for concentration camps - an Asian apologist, I must point out - and I fear it is her very patina of "civility" and "reason" that will attract the empty-headed to her assertion that what we really need is to revive the camps for all us treasonous types. I take special exception to this because my father was a guard at one of these camps during WW II. He used to get choked up, telling me how ashamed he was as his former neighbors would wave to him from behind the wire. "Oh, hi Mr. Ikagara, how are you?" I think much of his passion for civil rights came from participating in this injustice. I know he truly believed in the cause, but something in him also viewed it as a form of redemption. I can't believe we are heading there again so soon. Maybe this seems far fetched. But what if someone had told you four years ago that the U.S. Senate was about to confirm an Attorney General who not only condoned, but advocated torture and the abrogation of the Geneva Conventions?
