The shoe is on the other foot.
I know in the past I have been waiting at DU, with my nose pressed against the window, for reports when great stuff happens elsewhere. And, I'm always thankful yet impatient when people pop in and post, "I'm exhausted. It was great. More later."
That's pretty much what you're going to get from me.
"I'm exhausted. It was great. More later."
Highlights:
Got to meet Lynn Landes. Bob Fitrakis. Rev. Bill Moss. and more...
They, Richard Hayes Phillips and Bev Harris, among others gave strong testimony.
Two people who aren't household names mentioned that election stuff is now what they do, eat/breathe/sleep. I believe this is repeated all over the country. Talented people from all backgrounds are tearing results and documentation apart precinct by precinct.
Take home messages:
1. The election in November 2004 was not just coincidentally goofed up in a random fashion -- the problems were systemic, were multi-state, multi-method, but virtually all led to one direction -- more votes tallied for Bush than were cast. The words "fraud" and "crime" were used by some people close to investigations. One is attempting to determine if an algorithm was used in multiple states.
2. Bev talked about the Leon County FL demonstration of how Diebold optical scan systems can be hacked in about 90 seconds. Or, on a different day, 60 seconds. The mantra that came out of the Election Assessment Hearing was "PAPER BALLOTS COUNTED IN THE PRECINCTS." Not all were there, but there was a general flow of opinion in that direction. As someone put it, you can't compromise on this stuff, and get elections halfway right.
3. Robert Pastor, executive director of the Carter/Baker Commission deigned to come by. Even answered questions for a bit -- well, he moved his mouth and words came out, but I wouldn't say he answered them. Said the commission was not an investigative body, it was privately funded, and they would not be looking at evidence from Ohio etc., but rather would look at elections "generically" whatever the hell that means. Asked directly to accept testimony from people like Richard Hayes Phillips and Rev. Bill Moss, and challenged by Bev as to why they hadn't contacted her re the optical scan hack if they were, as he said, concerned about it, he made absolutely no commitments, no promises, no requests for contact information.
4. These are multi-talented, determined, creative people. And determined, I'll say that one again. It was an honor to be in the same room with them. (Pastor excepted)
