Governor signs paper trail bill: Local artist pushes for early compliance in Essex County

International terrorism overshadowed state election reforms at the governor’s office in Trenton on the day that Montclair resident Katherine Joyce met with acting Gov. Richard Codey’s deputy chief of staff to discuss Essex County’s purchase of digital record electronic (DRE) voting machines.

In Essex County, as the bills moved through the Legislature, voters’ rights advocates urged county officials to hold out for machines that can print voter-verifiable records of cast ballots.

“It was clear that the governor is supportive of the voter-verified paper record provision, having just signed the bill,” Joyce said.
Some voting-rights advocates find those errors preferable to a DRE malfunction somewhere in the binary code of its software.
