Worth supporting, IMO
http://www.honda.house.gov/latestnews.asp?ARTICLE3753=5715 US Rep. Mike Honda (D-San Jose) today introduced the "Election Weekend Act of 2005," legislation that help millions more hard-working Americans participate in the democratic process by changing the day of national elections to the first full weekend in November.
Current law requires that national Election Day take place every two years on the first Tuesday in November.
Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) joined Congressman Honda in introducing the legislation, which requires elections to occur on the first consecutive Saturday and Sunday in November of even-numbered years. In addition to expanding accessibility for voters in this fashion, the bill encourages private employers to grant employees days off, where necessary, to cast their votes.
"For more than 200 hundred years our nation has prided itself on being the preeminent democracy in the world, yet our rate of voter turnout reveals that our democracy suffers from serious illness," Congressman Honda said. "Currently, many civic-minded Americans do not, or can not vote due to time constraints and employment obligations that preclude them from getting to the polls. This bill will change that."
