Recently Ex-Diebold Board Member (Timken) now Ambassador to Germany
Don't know if this is the right place to post this, but it seems interesting. Also don't know if this is old news . . . it's new to me, anyway.

(snip)

Tapped to be the new U.S. Ambassador to Germany is William Robert Timken, Jr. former head of the Timken Company from 1962 - 2003 and according to two news sources he was a member of Diebold's Board of Directors since 1986 and stepped down from that position on June 30, 2005. Diebold Election Systems based in Ohio sells touch-screen voting machines not designed to produce a paper trail. In a Mother Jones Magazine on-line article from March 5, 2004 the importance of Ohio in the November 2004 election and the possibility of it being flawed and/or rigged are discussed. It points out that one of two companies selling such voting machines in Ohio is Diebold and it describes W.R.Timken as a Republican loyalist and a major contributor to GOP candidates. 'Since 1991 the Timken Company and members of the Timken family have contributed more than a million dollars to the Republican Party...'

The linked story went down the memory-hole.

But this one from another poster is still there.

EMBASSIES FOR SALE

Want To Become Bush's Next Ambassador?

By Georg Mascolo

Want to become a US ambassador? It's not as hard as you may think. Just donate a couple of hundred thousand to President George W. Bush's campaign coffers and pick your city. The president's new cadre of diplomats tend to be generous campaign donors, including the wealthy Ohio ball-bearing manufacture who is expected to run the US Embassy in Berlin.

2. error 404: Datei nicht gefunden!
you probably need to cut the url back to the top level domain (http://www.americanviewsabroad.org) and then navigate from there, assuming the article is still on the site.

Interesting info' btw. It looks like yet another of the syndicate got a piece of the action as a reward.

regards

4. Sorry, here is fixed link, I think
http://www.americanviewsabroad.org/2005/07/tapped-to-be-new-u.html

and, anyway, here's the rest of the article:

FinanzNachrichten also reported Timken retiring from Diebold's Board at http://www.finanznachrichten.de. The article can be found under 'suchen'.

The Hamburger Abendblatt informs its readers today that Timken has no diplomatic experience and does not speak any German. He had, however, contributed $200,000 to Bush's campaign. The articles explains how rewarding big-time political contributors has a long standing tradition in the U.S. dating back to Andrew Jackson in 1829. It concludes with a quote from Georgetown Professor Robert Lieber on how every third U.S. diplomat has no professional experience. www.abendblatt.de/daten/2005/07/21/461631.html.

6. Timken got $395 million from Bush Assministration;GAO criticizing-
GAO report hits

Timken over fees

The Timken Co. and its subsidiaries have reaped $395 million of the $1 billion that the government paid to U.S. corporations under a controversial anti-dumping law targeted for repeal. Nearly half the money it had awarded under the Continued Dumping and Subsidy Offset Act since 2001 went to just five companies, three of which are controlled by Canton-based Timken, according to a report issued Monday by the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Foes of the law say the World Trade Organization has deemed it inconsistent with international trade obligations and allowed other countries to retaliate with tariffs against U.S. industries. The House Ways and Means Committee is weighing a bill to repeal the law. Timken spokesman Jeff Dafler said the law's objective is to stop dumping, and his company wouldn't get any payments under the program if dumping stopped.

7. That seems a nice way of saying 'thank you' for stealing the election.
Timken on board of Diebold, also major ($200,000) contributer to *.

His (other) company gets nearly half a billion in payments funneled its way.

For good measure, he gets ambassadorship to Germany.

Another name for it might be 'Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations' behavior.
