Election reform: get up, stand up, show up, speak up -- or be silenced.
Edited on Sun Oct-16-05 11:07 AM by Fly by night
Lately, there has been more hand-wringing on DU about whether the election reform movement is slowing down, whether the concerns about stolen elections are fading, and whether we can do anything to prevent the continuing theft of democracy in our country. Don't drink that kool-aid -- we are having an impact across this country and those of us in the trenches right now can certainly use some reinforcements. In many counties and states, we have already proven that 6 or 7 committed voting rights activists can make a difference. Just imagine what 60 or 70 election reformers working together in each of our communities can accomplish.

Better yet, don't imagine it -- make it a reality NOW.

Here in Tennessee, every presentation we have made to any group (be they county or state election commissions or groups of interested citizens) starts with reviewing the abundant evidence that our election system is broken, that tolerating voter intimidation and suppression and allowing private companies to count our votes in secret are (and always were) bad ideas -- and that the evidence for how this privatized system is now being manipulated is very clear.

Following on that premise, we then discuss the fact that HAVA is now being manipulated here in the Orange State to further this paperless electronic voting trend, not to retard it. And that in every state, the existing HAVA plans need to be revisited to insure that our elections are free, fair and verifiable -- not clear sailing for election thieves. I don't know how many other states have had the good fortune of catching their Coordinator of Elections in a series of lies about what HAVA requires, as we have. Revealing those lies -- and getting county election commissions to purge the kool-aid from their veins in order to make decisions (like keeping punch-card systems or choosing op-scan systems over DREs) that will protect the integrity of our elections -- are the best things we can be doing now. Anyone who ignores the juggernaut that is HAVA and who doesn't fight against a misrepresentation of that law stands the risk of losing verifiable voting for the next generation.

If you're interested in election reform in your state, you have less than 90 days to do something that will make a difference. And the best way to make change is to start from the premise that, in most states, our election systems are broken (based on the abundant evidence of election fraud) and must be fixed. Not in the ways that corrupt election officials want them fixed, but in the ways that any small "d" democrat knows are obvious.

So don't just sit there typing about the problem -- get up, stand up, show up and speak up -- NOW. Or be silenced forever. Go to your county and state election commission meetings. Write and call your state representatives. Demand that all voting systems start with or produce voter-verified paper ballots. Demand that mandatory random MANUAL audits occur in every county in every election. Insist on voting machines with no wireless (i.e., hackable from a distance) capability. Implementing those three steps alone will make a huge difference.

Folks, we don't have much time left. If you're waiting on the Orange State before you get started, you are backing up. And if you're an Orange Stater and want to do more, PM me -- we have an oar waiting for you to start rowing with. And if you're working for election reform in other states, use this thread to announce yourself and invite your fellow state residents to get in touch with you.

We are the ones we have been waiting for. So why wait any longer. If we never stop fighting, we cannot lose. Peace out.

3. November 3, 2004
After looking over the election results at the Stupid-visor of Elections Office, I said to the Stupid-visor, "That will be the last time we vote on those machines. I will make sure of that."

Has it been almost a year? Geez. Well, the Board of Elections knows who I am. They know where I stand. Alone. I got 'em right where I want them. lol

However, at the last BoE meeting, they all agreed: Paper, counted by eye/hand, is the one sure way to count the vote. They know it.

My county will not be counting votes the way they did in 2004. Neither will my state. The only reason that has transpired is because People in my state made sure of it. You can do it in your's.

7. What else is there?
Votes will be recorded on Paper. And if I have my way, which is looking more and more likely, votes will be counted properly by human beings. Not by possibly infected, secretly coded, un-recountable machines.

optical scanning or hand-count. Hand count works for us, but I'm just interested to know if Americans will buy it on any scale.

9. Yeah! Sometimes the more we post here, the less we are getting done in the
"Real World!" Don't take forum activity as a measure of election reform activity or momentum! We can't do both at the same time!

Some of us who choose to remain anonymous here are doing a lot under their real names in the real world!

DU is an excellent sounding board and a great way to get the word out, solicit options, brainstorm, etc., but the "hard work" is usually done off-line or in other Internet venues.

Keep the faith y'all and never give up!

please do something today to stop HR 3910 and pass HR 550. Take a few minutes of your time to write, fax, or phone or mail your own version of this message to your Representative and the members of the Committee on House Administration.

**********************************************************************
I am writing in connection with two pieces of legislation referred to the Committe on House Administration, H.R. 3910 and H.R. 550. H.R. 3910 called “Verifying the Outcomes of Tomorrow’s Elections” is a disingenuous initiative aimed at controlling and curtailing voter participation in future federal elections by mandating a digital photo identification approved by Homeland Security, or a copy thereof for absentee ballots, as a condition for participation in democratic elections. This excessively burdensome requirement discriminates against elderly, disabled and poor citizen and will keep millions of voters from exercising their democratic right to vote. Section 5 of H.R. 3910 on paper record requirement for e-voting systems does not require that a paper ballot be kept as the permanent and auditable record of the vote in case of irregularities. H.R. 3910 does nothing to verify our elections, but would do a whole lot to make future elections unfair and discriminatory. H.R. 3910 cannot be amended, but must be rejected as a whole.
Please work for bi-partisan adoption of H.R. 550, the “Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act of 2005,” which would amend HAVA 2002 to add a voter-verified paper record for all voting systems, mandatory audits in random precincts, accessibility mechanisms for all voters, prohibition of undisclosed software and wireless communication devices, accreditation of e-system verification and prohibition of vendor conflicts of interest. All these measures are necessary to make e-voting and counting transparent, secure and verifiable.

20. Look, I'm bizarrely tired with what I'm already doing, but ....
is MN in trouble or are we ok? Does anyone know?

Nov 2 is a protest day all over the country. It might even get media attention. So if I go down to the capital what should I put on a flyer to hand out to anyone interested in Vote Reform?

I kind of like the "Would You Trust an ATM that didn't give you a receipt?" "Why isn't it the same with your Voting Machine?"

23. 60 Days?
Hi Bernie Ellis-

I really enjoyed your workshop at the National Summit to Save our Elections. You and John Washburn are my new heros. Thank you for your efforts.

You've inspired a group of us to form our own group. We're mostly in and around King County Washington. We're starting phase 1 of activism (education). And reaching out to other groups in our state. (We have a planning meeting coming up Tuesday Oct 24th. Please contact me, visit www.washblog.com, or my personal blog for more info.)

If you're interested in election reform in your state, you have less than 90 days to do something that will make a difference.

I'm sorry for being thick. What happens in 90 days?

Cheers, Jason Osgood / Seattle WA

24. HAVA funding disappears on Jan. 1, 2006
In order to get fderal funding through the HElp America Vote Act for machine purchases contracts must be signed by then.

For those jurisdiction that haven't yet decided on how their HAVA allocation will be spent there is still the chance that they will purchase technology that at least provides the possibility of verification.

Please sing the petition and send an email to your Representative.

Thanx!
