Anyone know how closely Sybase + Microsoft/Windows are related with
Edited on Sun Jan-08-06 09:05 PM by phoebe
regard to software sharing/source code/similar business model and in any other arenas?

Have seen a couple of articles that suggest these 2 practically shared code/software and would like to get a more technical analysis on this. As Marvin Bush and JEB appear to own a fair portion of stock in Sybase, was wondering if they were able to penetrate the electronic voting systems by emulating Microsoft's "glitches"..

Thanks for any info.

1. I think MS's "SQL Server" is built on an earlier version of Sybase
IIRC, both use the similarly derived 'Transact-SQL'.

2. I believe you are referring to old history
Microsoft licensed Sybase's code base for the first few versions of MS SQL Server. Part of it was that MS needed a database product. There was some code sharing where MS was responsible for most development/maintenance of the Windows code base. The last shared version I believe was 6.0 with 6.5 still having quite a bit of shared code. I also believe MS rewrote 7.0 to not only compensate for some bad architectural decisions, but also to completely free themselves of any code entanglements. Course if you believe them, they've fixed all of their problems with each major release. Course unless you spend a fortune on hardware and of course accept their opinion they know more about your business than you do (security issues from their "throw everything in including the kitchen sink") and their wizards which never replace actual knowledge.

4. '94
Insiders say the Sybase-Microsoft partnership fell apart because Sybase began to see it was tilted too much in Microsoft's favor. For years, Microsoft paid royalties to Sybase in exchange for marketing its SQL database "engine" to commercial users with large and midsize computers.

In April of 1994, the five-year-old joint development agreement between the two companies was terminated.
