WArren County NJ about to get delivery of 1st Avante Vote Trakker DREs
Am email from Rick Gleim

We are scheduled to have our NJ test on Jan. 26. We applied in early December and that was the first date that they could give us.

We are building equipment for Warren County and will ship a partial in January and the balance in February.

Rick

1. Will these be using the Canon scanner?
I'd be interested in getting a copy of the database of ballot images from the test.

2. Foger, would you give me a quick tour of that machine?
You like these things. Right? What of it?

Is it Open-Source?

Can they be talked into it?

4. More Info here
http://www.aitechnology.com/votetrakker2/overview.html

AVANTE pioneered the use of a voter verifiable paper record (or “receipt”) as part of an independent verification and audit. This paper record is printed for voters to review before leaving the voting booth and is enclosed in a protective window.
The VOTE-TRAKKER™ paper record incorporates a random voting session identifier that is tied one-to-one to the electronic memory of the ballot images. The unique identifier is bound to the selections to form an encrypted check code as part of electronic verification. The printed style is also relationally encrypted.

The paper record is cut into individual records without time-stamps or other information that can be used to identify the voters in anyway.

The use of this voter verifiable paper record has resulted in over 96% of voters feeling confident in casting their ballots and the belief that their votes are counted correctly. This is a good 26% higher than those systems without voter verified paper records.

6. Thanks, Steve.

Open source, by any chance??

And how does that machine compare in costs to some of the other DRE's?

7. I'll see what I can dig up in the way of bids they've submitted
I'm sure they can keep their price down compared to Diebold, ES&S and Sequoia. They don't spend nearly as much as the others on lobbyists! :)

3. Good news. Avante is at least honest as far as I've seen & VVPB.

8. After meeting them guys-- I have to say I was impressed
They looked at the 2002 VVSS and used that document as specs for the DRE.
Features I remember-

-touch a race- it gets big- fills the screen- touch again it goes back to full face ballot- 30 inch.
-Adjustable font color-- background color
-Audio ballot-multiple languages
-40 printed languages
-Hyraulic up & Down for the Wheelchair voter

Most folks at our demo in July that used the Avante DRE liked it -- compared to the Liberty DRE, Sequoia Advantage and Edge DREs.

The VVPB is a "better quality" thermal printer

I have pics someplace of the DRE with the cover off-- if anyone wants. Avante invited 2 of our people to visit the factory, thats when the pics were taken. Without checking my files-- IIRC the Tabulator is MS, while the DRE is Linux.

The DRE records the tally on a CD-ROM- to be used in the tabulator. IIRC the Ballot is also burned on a CD-ROM to be loaded into the DRE.

12. I wouldn't mind as much...

...if they used that whole set-up to give an election night result but counted every piece of paper for the certified result.

Other than that, I have no idea what goes on inside those boxes.

For the diabled, it may offer something.

I'm hoping Foger will show up and let us know about his favorite parts.

see my post # 8-
I think I highlighted the better parts. Using Cd-ROMs seems to be a big difference- still a DRE though.
