Looks like Bill Richardson (NM) has turned into a lion for paper ballot!!
He's pushing for the reforms he wants, i.e., a paper ballot to assure a paper trail and trustworthy elections. (VotersUnite)

County elections officials are questioning whether New Mexico can quickly switch to a paper ballot-based system and have it in place by the November general election.

However, Gov. Bill Richardson said Friday that he’s sticking with the proposal despite the concerns.

“I believe there is no need to delay,” Richardson said at a news conference. “With all due respect to the county clerks, we’ve waited long enough to have in New Mexico prompt and efficient and trustworthy elections.

“We can’t wait any longer for a bureaucracy to stand in the way of getting this done.”

Mario Trujillo, the president of a group representing all 33 county clerks, sent a letter to Richardson last week outlining several potential problems that could surface with the change to a paper-ballot system statewide....

2. If they get paper ballots it will be interesting to see how the next....
election compares to previous elections. I hope there are mandatory audits with the optiscans or the situation may not be much better.

3. There were voting irregularities in NM in 2004
in Bush's favor, of course, and Richardson did NOTHING! I wonder if his running for president in 2008 has anything to do with this!

4. Bill's no advocate. The state was facing a lion of a lawsuit.
Richardson is a political realist. VoterAction New Mexico fielded a lawsuit that has revealed just how terrible New Mexico's voting system is. When the state tried to sign a contract to buy Sequoia Edge DREs, which aren't 2002 certified, VoterAction successfully blocked them in court. The activists in NM have been tigers and Richardson and Co. finally claimed victory in the teeth of dfeat.

It's a great day, but it's not because Richardson is doing what's right because he's an advocate.
