Daily Thread Editors Threaten to Strike - Cite Low Recommendations

Daily Thread Editors Threaten to Strike - Cite Low Recommendations

February 23, 2006

Dateline Internet

Asking to remain annonymous, an editor of Democratic Underground's "Election Reform, Fraud, & Related News", also known as "The Daily Thread" suggested that a strike was not out of the question unless members of the guild receive higher pay - namely, recommendations.

Interviewed for this report, he said members are reluctant to beg for recommendations, but after spending one to two hours for each edition, the least forum members could do is make sure the thread makes it to the greatest page where it will help expose the danger of e-voting and efforts to eliminate it.

snip

He also lamented that DU posters may not know that they can take any of the stories and make a thread out of it for discussion.

snip

PM's to other editors were not returned.

snip/recommend the Daily Thread, daily.

4. K&R We do need to concentrate on Election Reform
Kos was right that elections are not as "sexy" as the constant unbelievable and never ending bush scandals but the Diebold blackbox voting is the most important issue.

5. Election Reform Number One
I look at every item in the Election Reform thread every time it's on GREATEST page.

But I don't know where to find it when it's not on GREATEST page.

My two regular favorite threads are ELECTION NEWS and STOCK MARKET, but if they don't make it onto the GREATEST page, I don't see them.

Please don't assume everybody knows the intricacies of DU recommendation rules. How do I find it to recommend it?

8. Sorry, been distracted by PortGate
Edited on Thu Feb-23-06 10:16 PM by MissWaverly
Since I live in Baltimore, I am a little alarmed at the prospect of George giving
management of our port to the government of UAE. But keep onward and upward
on the election reform effort esp. since some rank and file repugs are now coming out and admitting that 2000 was stolen away from Al Gore.

15. Sorry, you have more trouble. Did you know about LamoneGate?

OK, I just named it that, but did you know about the MD SoS using uncertified Diebold software in 2K4?

17. Yes, melodramas always make me weep
I knew it all along because the City of Baltimore has never posted the results of the
2004 General Election on its website. I had hopes when our governor Robert Ehrlich came
out strongly in favor of election reform but Lamone and our State Assembly are now
saying there is nothing wrong with Diebold and the 2006 election is too close to implement
change. I KNEW this was going to happen.

14. Sometimes the daily thread gets 10 or 11 recommends
Sometimes as many as 20 or more. 10 or 15 recommends dont get you very high on the greatest page.

18. I believe, bleever
The difference now is that the rank and file repugs are now admitting 2000 was stolen and
that's a big milestone. I never understand how they just went along with it. Who can really trust a cheater.

20. Egads. THEEEEE most important threads on DU alla time...
Damn me. I promise to do better and recommend em. They are of UTMOST IMPORTANCE!!!!

Sincere thanks for the work and dedication devoted to these daily threads. They are one of the few things that give me any hope... that there are tenacious people keeping a sharp eye on this most important issue on a daily basis, and keeping us all informed.

21. there is only one way to avert the strike
1) More Volunteers to help with the Daily threads

2) No matter how tired you are at the end of the day-- come to the ERD & Recommend the daily thread- do it- or be labeled an SOB forever---

Ideally, a west coaster (who can start the thread) paired with an east coaster.

Maybe that was part of the problem? :-)

I pass out "recommends" at ER like a (somewhat judicious) Santa.

I'll be spending less time on DU, but will make an effort to check in to ER, so don't go on strike or I'm warning you...I'll call in my goons.

I'm somewhat timid about starting threads, but I've been working through my "issues" on the matter.

PM me anytime if something really important is languishing, I'm signed up for email alerts when I receive a PM, so I don't have to be on DU to know someone is in need of a "raise". I'm consistently amazed with how a thread can take off once it is released from the confines of this forum and onto the greatest page.

I think autorank has found one of the keys: put "Kerry" into the heading!

Repub bashing type titles also get the juices flowing. Frame issues as activism AND as a satisfying emotional release in the thread heading. ;-) But this is definitely not a science.

Edit: so, the reality is that election reform is actually "sexy" once you attach it to strong emotions.

Just look at how Mickey-D's equates their inertia-producing grub with happiness, good times, togetherness, family love and belonging.

And the reality is also that equating the strong emotions over Kerry's "loss" and the anger with BushCo that never, ever HAD to be is not the stretch that the corporate ad campaigns must resort to in order to create strong emotional reinforcement.
