1. LA: Dispersed New Orleans Voters Given Minimal Assistance in Voting

That’s right. NAACP and Project Acorn sued the Governor (Blanco) and the Elections Officials to get satellite voting sites and also access to FEMA lists of those dispersed in order for candidates to contact them. A Clinton appointed Federal judge shut them down. That’s Louisiana democracy, post Katrina.

Evacuees can vote absentee or in La.
Judge rules against out-of-state polling

A federal judge refused Friday to order Louisiana officials to provide out-of-state satellite polling places for displaced voters or to take other steps that could have forced a delay of the New Orleans primary election scheduled for April 22.

U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle's action pleased groups that have been pushing to have the already-postponed election held as soon as possible, but it disappointed those who say that not enough has been done to give the mostly black residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina an equal chance at participating in one of the most important elections in the city's history.

It is widely thought that the city's electorate today has a significantly higher percentage of white voters than before the storm. New Orleans has not had a white mayor since 1978, but of about a dozen announced candidates in the current race, only three, including incumbent Ray Nagin, are black.

According to testimony presented during a Thursday hearing by groups such as the NAACP and ACORN, most of the hundreds of thousands of New Orleanians still living outside the city are black, and the black evacuees tend to be considerably poorer and to be living farther away from New Orleans than white evacuees, making it less likely they will be able to get back to New Orleans to vote in person.

2. LA: NOLA Voters Screwed by Judge

Judge Rejects Suit to Open New Orleans Poll Stations Around U.S.

NEW ORLEANS — A federal judge on Friday rejected a lawsuit seeking satellite voting sites outside Louisiana where Hurricane Katrina evacuees have settled, so they could participate more easily in New Orleans' mayoral election.

The decision means that the April 22 election — which will give voters an opportunity to choose who will lead them back from the disaster — will proceed as planned.

The Louisiana Legislature recently eased its absentee ballot requirements, and also has allowed for voting stations to be placed around the state. On Friday, U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle ruled that those measures provided equal access for all who want to vote.

The suit was brought by two displaced New Orleans residents, joined by voting-rights activists. It alleged that by making absentee balloting the primary option for evacuees, the state was denying them voting rights equal to those of residents still living in the city.

(The article goes on to point out that the city population is currently predominantly white.)

3. LA: Candidates Can’t Get Voter Information in New Orleans Election

Judge rejects legislators' bid to get FEMA list of evacuees

Campaigns require contact with the voters. Not only is the state of Louisiana making it hard for dispersed voters to vote, it’s not giving out the list of voters in those areas for candidates to contact. This is a universal process throughout the country. Could it be they’re trying to skew the election to the current resident voting population.

For the second time in two weeks, two New Orleans state representatives failed in their attempts to have a judge order the state to release the list of Louisiana residents who have requested assistance from FEMA.

State Sen. Cleo Fields, D-Baton Rouge, says Wednesday’s ruling by state District Judge William Morvant sets the stage for New Orleans to hold a “secret election.” Fields filed the suit on behalf of state Reps. Charmaine Marchand and Cedric Richmond.

“How are these people going to run for office if they can’t get in touch with their constituents?” Fields said after court. “Ninety-seven percent of the people in their districts have been displaced” by Hurricane Katrina.

“We are going to have a public election without having a public voting roll,” Fields said. “It is totally against democracy.”

4. OH: All Noe All the Time – Blackwell’s Pal in the Dock
Edited on Mon Feb-27-06 01:42 AM by autorank
Tom Noe is the Ohio Ambassador of election sleaze. He raised money by screwing state retirement funds. He had some crazy coin collector deal (oh yea, great investment). Whenever Blackwell was sued, Noe was there to support him (odd, isn’t it). He was a Bush “Pioneer” (wonder if that comes after Eagle Scout). He’s not caught. Let’s hope he can sing too;)

Witnesses say they funneled donations
Effort led to ‘Pioneer’ status for coin dealer

BLADE STAFF WRITERS

COLUMBUS — Tom Noe was so eager to become a Bush “Pioneer” that he used a pair of former top aides to Gov. Bob Taft to launder campaign contributions to the President’s re-election bid, documents released yesterday by prosecutors show.

H. Douglas Talbott told investigators last summer that he and Doug Moormann took part in Mr. Noe’s alleged scheme in October, 2003, to illegally funnel money into the President’s campaign.

As a reward for their fund-raising efforts, Mr. Noe gained the elite fund-raising status and an invitation to a White House Christmas party, and Mr. Talbott had his photo taken with the President, Mr. Talbott said.

Mr. Talbott and Mr. Moormann, also aides to former Gov. George Voinovich, were convicted on ethics violations yesterday for failing to report money they were given from Mr. Noe. Documents released by prosecutors detailing their probe into the former aides — although heavily redacted because of ongoing investigations — provided new details about Mr. Noe’s generosity toward public officials and his eagerness to curry favor with all levels of government.

Noe timeline
Tuesday, February 14, 2006

Events in the state scandal involving the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation's $50 million investment in two rare-coin funds controlled by former Maumee coin dealer Thomas W. Noe:

1998

March -- The bureau selects Noe as one of 28 emerging managers and one of three alternative-investment managers and invests $25 million with him to buy and sell rare coins.

2001

June -- The bureau invests $25 million more with Noe, despite concerns from internal bureau auditors about a lack of controls, Noe's investments in real-estate and other noncoin assets, and possible conflicts of interest.

2004

September -- External auditors report that 119 coins worth $93,000 from Colorado cannot be located. Auditors say Noe suspects a former employee of "misappropriation of assets."

Yesterday -- Noe is charged with 53 felonies, including theft of $1 million or more and 10 other theft counts; enagaging in pattern of corrupt activity; 11 counts of money laundering; eight counts of tampering with records and 22 counts of forgery. He pleads not guilty and is released after posting a $500,000 surety bond.

Connection found between Mr. Noe and the Election - Very cool
Edited on Fri May-20-05 09:43 PM by mikelewis

Okay, I posted the information about Cheif Justice Moyer and a few other Ohio Justices recusing themselves from a case in Ohio a few days ago.

Another Noe link by mikelewis, awesome.

It has been bugging me as to how this case has exploded so quickly. Every day the Toledo Blade has more and more information on this developing story and the pace of revelations struck me as odd. So of course I just had to snoop.

Well, turns out the Mr. Noe who is in deep shit over the Rare Coin Scandal in Ohio was also definitely involved in the election process here in Ohio. It was Mr. Noe and company who were intervening on Kenneth Blackwells behalf in many of the court cases where questions of provisional ballots arose. He was also an Intervenor in the case to override the protest to the fraudulent recount in Ohio.

MOTION TO INTERVENE OF THOMAS W. NOE , GLENN A. WOLFE, AND GREGORY L. ARNOLD
Pursuant to Rule 24(a) and (b) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Thomas W. Noe, Glenn A. Wolfe, and Gregory L. Arnold (hereinafter, “Intervenors”), hereby move this Court for an order granting leave to intervene as Defendants in this proceeding. Intervenors have a vital interest in the subject matter of this proceeding and are so situated that the disposition of this action may, as a practical matter, impair or impede their ability to protect those interests.

There are many more cases, some dating back to 2003 where Mr. Noe Intervened on Blackwell's behalf. Another little twist in the story is the Judge who presided over many of the cases Judge Carr, is also the Judge who is now responsible for the only remaining lawsuit referencing the 2004 election.

New laws to tackle election fraud
New laws are to be introduced by the Government this week aimed at preventing postal vote fraud.

http://www.24dash.com/content/news/viewNews.php?navID=2&newsID=3426

The Elections Minister Harriet Harman will today announce a new package of 14 tough new measures to tackle electoral fraud.

The Government will use the national launch of the Association of Chief Police Officers' new guidance on election fraud prevention and detection as the platform to issue the new guidelines in advance of the upcoming local elections.

Ms Harman will set out the Government's determination to ensure that:
* No-one fiddles the vote,
* Everyone who is entitled to vote is on the electoral register, and
* Everyone turns out to vote.

8. VA: Party Switcher (Dem to Repub.) Rep Virgil Goode Involved in Election

Goode made a big deal of betraying the Democratic Party in Virginia. He was just too good for us. Had to be a Republican. Now we know why. He really made out on illegal contributions. The DC and VA media is trying to get the pious Mr. Goode to comment but he has nothing to say. I do, it’s SPECIAL ELECTION time!!!

Former MZM head pleads guilty to bribery, election fraud

Defense contractor linked to $90,000 in contributions to U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode

The former head of a defense contracting company linked to more than $90,000 in campaign contributions to U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode pleaded guilty today to giving cash and illegal contributions to three members of Congress.

Mitchell Wade, who resigned last year as chief executive officer of MZM Inc., admitted in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., that he bribed Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham of California in exchange for government business being steered his way.

For the first time, authorities also disclosed that Wade made illegal contributions to two other lawmakers — identified in court documents only as "Representative A" and "Representative B."

Language in the court records about Representative A bears a striking resemblance to Goode, R-Rocky Mount, who received more than $90,000 in campaign contributions from MZM’s political action committee, its employees and their spouses. Taken together, the MZM-linked donors represented Goode’s largest campaign contributor.

9. MI: “I see dead voters!” Apparently quite a few in Detroit

Seems they don’t automatically take dead voters off the registration lists. Some people went in and were accidentally mistaken for dead people, no kidding, that’s what they say. The local election official for Detroit is “not aware of any problem.”

Grave Matter: Detroit Paper Says Dead People Voted in Election

DETROIT A newspaper's review of ballots cast in the November election shows many were cast under the names of people who have died, were serving time in prison or did not live in the city.

Detroit election records say Fred Douglas Henley voted at a polling precinct Nov. 8. Henley, however, died the day before the election, and his voting address long has been vacant and boarded up, The Detroit News reported Sunday.

Blanche Credit died in 2003. But she's recorded as voting in November, too.

It is unknown whether Henley and Credit were names someone used to cast fraudulent votes or whether they simply represent clerical errors. Mistakes commonly occur when election workers record a vote under a similar name or confuse voters with their relatives. But the problems have prompted Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land to call for faulty voter rolls to be purged in virtually every jurisdiction.
