Group Calls for Georgia Secretary of State to Step Down

A Georgia-based group is calling for Secretary of State Cathy Cox to step down, during her run for governor. The group, Defenders of Democracy, says the state's electronic voting system is too inaccurate.

<snip>

The concern was brought up during the state election board meeting in Savannah this afternoon. They say, until each voter has an individual printout after his or her ballot is cast, voters have no guarantee their votes were recorded accurately.

"What we're looking for is a voter-verified paper trail," said Defenders of Democracy cofounder Mark Sawyer. "The voter verifies it there in the polling booth, and once it drops, we know that that vote has been verified by the voter and is available for auditing purposes and recounts."

Secretary of State Cox's office has firmly stated it has found no evidence of any problems with the voting system.

Wonder where exactly Cox has been looking for problems with the GA system? And, of course we know a VVPAT is not going to fix the problem.

2. the irony
it is truly sad that Cathy Cox is a Diebold Woman.
She is a democrat, and word is that state democrats are shielding her,
and hope for her to become Governor of Georgia.

How unethical is it to be elected by the voting machines you oversee?

Kudos to "Defenders of Democracy" for calling on Cathy Cox
to step down.

That is an excellent move, and hopefully DoD can get
other groups to join that call.

Should Cathy Cox Resign as Secretary of State?
There's a new site on the internet entitled "CathyDiebold.com", where the owner/proprietor of the site makes the case for Cathy Cox to resign as Secretary of State:

4. this is a good platform to keep hammering on throughout!
They are really on to something, and this is a bone that they should not
let go of!

Asserting that Secretary of State Cathy Cox has a conflict of interest, an election watchdog group wants her to step down during her campaign for governor.

Atlanta-based Defenders of Democracy made the demand Monday in Savannah at a meeting of the State Elections Board, which Cox chairs.

Countering that the group misunderstands her role in the election process, Cox, a candidate for the Democratic nomination, said she'll stay put.

5. It's a good approach, but.....
These machines put her (back) in office in 2002 and no one asked her to step aside during that election.

She's a horrid, awful woman who will make an absolutely horrible governor.

But she brought those machines to Georgia for a reason - for her race to the Governor's Mansion.

6. Step down? She gets to count her own election! Why would she step down???
In the great tradition of Katherine Harris and soon to be governor Blackwell, Cox will rig her own election and beat the odds to the governor's mansion (IMO). That's why there were no problems with Diebold in Georgia's primaries! The "feature"-laden machines produced the "right" results.

7. Exactly
Which is why she brought these machines to Georgia in 2002.

And here's a few funny little facts.........in Cox's 2002 re-election, she won handily in every county in the state (159) except 14 counties. But, in the same election, the longest sitting house speaker in the country (Tom Murphy) was defeated. And republicans took the governor's mansion for the first time in 134 years!

But Cox won.

And Max Cleland lost.

Does ANYONE really believe Cathy Cox will "lose?"
