"Good" voting systems & State Laws-R-Us ??
Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 06:42 PM by IndyOp
I've got a county commissioner who managed to work in the word "Diebold" about 6 times in a brief conversation this afternoon. I can explain why Diebold is bad. What I can't offer him is a list of alternative companies that manufacture precinct-based optical scan systems. Any hints?

Also - I am working on setting up appointments with my State Reps and State Senator. If anything is to be done in my state before Nov. 2006 -- I think I need to provide them with the laws passed in several states that require VVPBs and AMRAs (automatic manual random audits). Any links to actual state code?

Thanks!

On Edit: Velvet Revolution lists the BIG 9 as Advanced Voting Solutions (AVS), Diebold, Danaher-Guardian, Election Systems & Software , HartInterCivic, MicroVote, Sequoia Voting Systems, Triad GSI and UniLect Corp. Any of these worthy at all? Any start ups who are really trying to do the job right?

1. three states to look at
check out

www.ncvoter.net we have ES&S iVotronic with RTAL, ES&S M100 optical scan and Automark.
Here is our law. We have the "Diebold clause". Its not perfect, but its good.
We had our first hand to eye audit of paper to machine after May 2, 2006.
76 out of 100 counties chose optical scan.

www.nyvv.org pushing for optical scan/automark, has great law, see their website, or
contact Bo Lipari for more info. I think NYVV may have a better law than NC has,
they thought of stuff that we didn't or couldn't get in ours.
They haven't bought machines yet, they are holding off until 2007 I think.

you really should check out what they did in New Mexico, I think they banned
touchscreens altogether, and have pretty good audits.
I wish we could have banned touchscreens, but we are lucky we got paper in NC.

2. Thanks. I am thinking I need a lawyer --
To pull the law code in Indiana - to find out what the law already says about 'paper ballots hand-counted'. I was told by a commissioner today that paper ballots must be made available at all precincts in case of machine failures. Maybe we could declare all the DREs without VVPBs failures and go to paper ballots, hand counted for Nov. 2006.

I've bookmarked the VVNM site and North Carolina law page - thanks for that, especially!

:hi:

3. Even tho KS is more or less ES&S and Diebold
because of Thornburgh, the SEc of State, who brags that he helped draft and pass the 02 HAVA law, KS has actually certified the following machines, according to the Sec of State's web site. Here are some of the machines listed as certified. I personally think Avante is the best of the lot from what I've read, but I'm not a computer geek. I feel confident that Avante is not a RW theft machine. From the very beginning they offered a voter-verified paper print out and they had all kinds of extras to guarantee a fair vote.

Here's the KS list:

AccuPoll Tustin CA
Avante Princeton Junction NJ
Business REcords Corp Dallas TX
ES&S Omaha NE
Diebold Overland Park KS
Fidlar Doubleday Rock Island IL
Accu-Touch Electronic Ballot Station
AccuVote
Hart InterCivic Lafayette CO
MicroVote Indianapolis IN
Sequoia Denver CO
Voting TEchnologies Intl Milwaukee

Of course there are a lot of other machines out there, Populex comes to mind which is manfd in IL I think. But these are the ones certified in KS.
