URGENT: Call your reps! House vote set on Voting Rights Act Wed.7-12 - |
|
Subject: Call Now: House vote set on Voting Rights Act renewal Wed. 7/12
The house vote for the renewal of the Voting Rights Act (H.R. 9/S. 2703)was scheduled for June 21 but at the last minute the vote was canceled.
The reason? A handful of ultra-conservative Republican Congressmen objected to it.
We cannot let this landmark civil rights legislation be held hostage to a vocal minority.
Tell Congress to stop stalling and renew the Voting Rights Act without amendments.
Call the House Switchboard NOW at 1-866-808-0065 (toll-free)
The time for action is NOW!
Key provisions of the VRA will expire next summer: Section 5, the federal pre-clearance provision, which requires certain jurisdictions to obtain federal approval before making any voting or election changes; Section 203, which requires certain jurisdictions to provide language assistance to limited English proficient voters; and Sections 6-9, which authorize the Department of Justice to send federal examiners and observers to monitor elections.
Here’s what you can do:
Call House Speaker Denny Hastert (R-IL), House Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-OH) and House Judiciary Chair James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and tell them not to permit harmful amendments. -- Tell them you want the Voting Rights reauthorization (H.R. 9) to pass AS IS. -- Tell them not to let this historic legislation be watered down or gutted.
Call the House Switchboard NOW at 1-866-808-0065 (toll-free).
Thank you for your prompt action to help pass this vital legislation.

2. voter supression the key to GOP 2006 victory |
|
I hope people are paying attention to this and not letting our rights slip away.
Sure as the VRA is not renewed, you can expect massive voter disenfranchisement.
Then, when millions cant vote - are we going to take to the streets then, and face the administrations' strong arms?
