1. 4 sep requests say need money by 7/10 to retain attorney
On July 7, we were told by emlev that
"we need $10,000 by Monday July 10 to retain our attorney."

This update says you got more than that.

Who is the attorney?
Who is the plaintiff?
Who is the defendant?
How much was the retainer?
Who owns the pay pal account that the money went to?

Legal Funds Needed by 7/10 for "Voting Machine Sleepover" Debacle!

Timelines are very tight for the few legal methods of calling elections into question. While we're all working hours and hours without pay, we need to raise money for legal fees. Specifically, we need $10,000 by Monday July 10 to retain our attorney.

DU, you've done it before and we're counting on you to do it again. An amount this small for a cause so important should be easy for this committed group of over 90,000! Velvet Revolution (a group started by DUers) is accepting donations on our behalf. Please give what you can this very minute by clicking here.

Then, in spite of DU giving permission for ONE discussion thread only, here are
three more threads seeking emergency donations to hire a lawyer by Monday July 10:

3. Is this for the $10K for the lawyer or for the $130K for the recount?
I am broke -- and I gave Brad $50 last week for his (BradBlog's) expenses during this expedition.

2. clarification?
http://www.bradblog.com/?p=3060 7/13

Fundraising led by VelvetRevolution.us, an election integrity organization, has so far raised about $10,000 towards the overall expenses of fighting for accountability in the Busby/Bilbray election.

Jacobson's letter was appropriately cautious in demanding a written response from the Registrar that the documents would be supplied before being forced to commit $6000 of those funds towards the effort without any assurances or accountability from Haas. (DISCLOSURE: The BRAD BLOG is a co-founder of VR.)

Is this the $10,000 that was solicited on DU last weekend SPECIFICALLY for the purpose of retaining an attorney?

The $10,000 that HAD to be raised by last Monday?

WAS the attorney retained??

"of those funds"? It was represented on DU that the funds solicited were for retention of legal council, not recount expenses.

Why are these funds now apparently earmearked for a purpose other than the were solicited for?

Clarification would be appreciated.

3. News article
http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2006/07/11/news/top_stories/23_25_197_10_06.txt

$.76 to recount each ballot and get other info? Ridiculous.

'Twould be nice to see some tough questions asked of the San Diego election officials, eh? Guess that's what a lawyer would do right away?

4. did anyone hire a lawyer?
This press release dated July 14, 2006 doesn't mention the lawyers
involved in Califo 50 Bilbray/Busby

It looks like the case is stuck. :(

Could a lawyer get things moving?

VelvetRevolution: Calif. 50 Bilbray/Busby Registrar Mikel Hass Stonewalls on Hand Count of Paper Ballots

On the morning of Wednesday, July 12, Jacobson was informed that the 8 a.m. pre-count meeting was cancelled and all other "interested parties" had been notified. However, Jacobson had not been notified. Jacobson again wrote Haas on July 13, citing major ambiguities in the Registrar's email, and asked whether the "manual hand count (has) ended ... (and if yes), why has it ended?..."

The Registrar's Office has stonewalled the election count by failing to follow the law and procedures, VelvetRevolution said...

There is a lawyer, right?

If we know of the attorney's firm, won't they be able to
set up a legal defense escrow fund that people can donate to directly?
