JULY 14, 2006
http://www.commondreams.org/news2006/0714-13.htm <> ~ 6:35 -- MATT PASCARELLA covers the aftermath of the Mexican election Eight days ago, between 300,000 and 500,000 Mexican citizens crowded the downtown square area, Zocalo, in Mexico City to demand a hand count of the contentious presidential election held on July 2. Today, another mass of citizens is protesting in the square in support of López Obrador -- one report is that the crowd is larger than last week.
The current vote tally places conservative Felipe Calderón ahead by six-tenths of one percent of the vote over leftist Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Last week we spoke with Norm Stockwell about the situation.
Today, amid widespread allegations of election fraud, we hear from investigator Matt Pascarella.
Matt Pascarella has just returned from there, and will speak with Monitor co-host Pokey Anderson about the tense election aftermath. He is a researcher, writer, and producer, for investigative journalist Greg Palast.
Matt also writes for the Progressive. He is also a director of La Lutta New Media Collective, Inc., a nonprofit organization based in New York City providing production support and technical assistance to groups that promote social justice, public art and community-based media.
In 2004 the USC Annenberg School of Communication in Los Angeles awarded his research on President Bush's use of fear words with distinguished honors. He graduated magna cum laude with decorated honors in Communications/Media Studies and Political Science from Marymount Manhattan College. He is based in New York City.
