problem
Working Assets is promoting "early voting" in CA. I do not know whether they have recommended this also in other states.

LA County uses Diebold Accuvote TSX for early voting!

received this e-mail I am going to write back with a resounding NOT OVER MY DEAD BODY!

Have Your Say Before Election Day!

Here's a convenient way to have your say. California offers
early voting -- so you can head to the polls before Election Day. It's
a great option if you're planning to volunteer on Election Day, prefer
to bypass long lines, or have a busy schedule and need the
flexibility. The best part is, you don't need a special reason to vote
early. You can just go vote.

In California, you can vote early, starting now or in the near
future. Early voting start dates and sites vary by county, so check
with your local election officials to find out where you can vote
early by clicking here:

friends, family, and colleagues -- who is interested in exercising
their fundamental right to
vote. ***

Thank you for working to build a better world.

an automatic response to my e-mail

Dear Mr. Easton,

While I appreciate your effort to get out the vote "early voting" is not something I will advocate.
Los Angeles County uses Dieblod AccuVote TSX -

Please review the "systems in use by county" at the SOS website.

I will not render my rights to any of these electronic voting systems.

Thank you.

Do you have any idea that you are encouraging people to vote early on insedure voting systems that are failure prone and can't be audited? While your GOTV intention is comendable, you REALLY need to understand just how problematic your recommendation is.

The safest way for Californians to vote in this round is by hand delivered absentee ballots. Make it hard for them to lose our votes -- at least, make them work at it.

6. wait a minute......... .................... ................... WHAT ????
you can vote early on electronic voting machines??? Who's guarding them? That is the most absurd thing I've ever heard, and why the hell would anyone suggest you do that who's not a Repub trying to steal the election???

I'm not on their email list but I think I'll write them as well.

I've never done an absentee ballot because I always felt they could just "lose" ballots from certain areas, but I'm going to this time and drop it off at the polling place.

10. I just thought of something. If we need to, we might be able to
challenge the election because of early voting on unsecured machines. Is that possible?

11. Land Shark question
We would have to probably survey or at least visit these places that provide early voting and observe - who is manning the machines.

Are observers and judges scheduled to check on this early voting process? It spans over many days -

I remember when they first started offering this it was kind of a testing situation and there were less than a handful locations - I do not remember if McCormack has broken the total tally down to show how many voters actually used the service - I will quickly check and see if I can find that data.

'till later

All detailed data archives from previous elections are no longer posted on the SOS or LA County site.
As for LA County even the primary summary data link shows the "404 object not found"

But remember this piece of bragging by McCormack it is still up there - the only thing close to at least a summary breakdown of 2004

Record Shattering Numbers from the
November 2, 2004 Presidential General Election
• Record # of registered voters (4,075,122)
• Record # of voter registrations in the last month (446,122)
• Record # of absentee ballots mailed (752,217)
• Record # of absentee ballots returned & counted (636,028)
• Record # of early voters via electronic touchscreen (65,665)
• Record # of provisional ballots issued (204,578)
• Record # of provisional ballots counted (166,894)
• Record voter turnout (3,085,582 = 79.1%*)
• Record # of poll workers recruited and trained (30,381)
• 4,118 County Poll Workers
• 3,120 College Poll Workers
• 4,333 High School Poll Workers
• 18,810 other
• Record # of phone calls answered on election day (90,679)
• Record # of website visitors on election day (191,972)
• Record # of website hits on election day (5,999,152)
* % based on 3,901,106 registered voters (# at time of official report to Secretary of State prior to election day).

http://www.lavote.net/GENERAL/ARCHIVES/Default.cfm

if the results are close - there must be at least 150,000 early voters througout the state - considering *'s Ohio difference -

also FAQ pdf on early voting - total false assurances - :puke:

here
IS A TOUCHSCREEN VOTE A SECRET BALLOT?
Yes. The voter access card only instructs the touchscreen machine which contests to display for the districts and electoral contests in the area where the voter lives. It contains neither confidential voter information nor a record of how anyone voted. Nothing in the Touchscreen machine links personal information to how the ballot was cast.

ARE VOTES LOST DURING A POWER FAILURE?
No. Each touchscreen machine has a battery backup.. In the event of a power failure, early voting staff will allow voters to continue voting using battery power. All voting information is stored on both the hard drive, the cartridge and the voter-verified paper audit trail, none of which is erased during a power failure.

HOW DO I KNOW MY VOTE IS SECURE?
Management, operational and legal measures are in place to protect voting machine security, including:
• The AccuVote TSX units are stand-alone machines. They are not connected to the Internet and cannot be accessed from any other computer.
• County election officials maintain control over ballot creation, source codes, and management systems.
• County election staff thoroughly tests equipment prior to and after Election Day.
• Preparation of equipment includes sealing all access ports with tamper-evident seals that are monitored by early voting staff for any signs of tampering.
• All computer software and hardware have passed rigorous security requirements of the Federal and State governments prior to certification for use.
HUH?

Each touchscreen voting site is physically surveyed by election staff to make note of access points and existing security systems. Throughout early voting, election staff have exclusive use of the rooms during and after voting hours until all touchscreen equipment has been removed from the sites at the end of the early voting period. All equipment at the sites are safeguarded by secured storage, access control devices, inventory controls and tamper-evident seals.

Another important safeguard is the law - tampering with voting equipment is a felony. California Elections Code Section 18564 states in part:
Any person is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for up to four years who tampers with, interferes with, or attempts to interfere with, the correct operation of, or willfully damages in order to prevent the use of, any voting machine, voting device, voting system, vote tabulating device, or ballot tally software program source codes.

HAS THE STAFF OF THE EARLY VOTING SITES BEEN TRAINED TO WORK THE MACHINES?
Yes. Each site has trained staff, a complete early voting instruction handbook, and immediate access by telephone to election authorities at the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office should further assistance be needed.
