15. How Progressives Can Win the Culture War |
|
We are Americans.
We are teachers, lawyers, bankers, and doctors. We work in factories, warehouses, farmhouses and office buildings. We attend sporting events, company picnics, church functions, and reunions. ...and we believe we are a united country.
We stand up and sing along when we hear the National Anthem and speak loudly when we recite the Pledge of Allegiance. We know love and life-long commitment are the foundations of a family. We honor those who dedicate their lives to serving and protecting our children, our families, and our freedom. We honor those who gave their lives for freedom by respecting the freedom of our neighbors to live the lives they lead. We know that God gives us the strength to succeed and the wisdom to know the difference between right and wrong. We ask our teachers and parents to work together in order to help our children succeed. We demand a maximum return for our tax investments and believe they should be used for the greater good.
We believe in the American birth-right of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. We believe in empowering and giving voices to all Americans. We believe in is both a right and responsibility to speak out where we feel there is injustice. We believe in the sanctity of nature and that the beauty of America must be preserved. We believe in cultivating a culture of service where we develop stronger communities built on empathy. We believe in working hard and embracing progress in order to ensure better opportunities for our children. We believe in our cultural inheritance set forth by our founding fathers to never be satisfied with the status quo. We believe in being a beacon of hope and integrity for the rest of the world.
We are hard-workers, free-thinkers and freedom-lovers. We are Americans.

Pushed for recount which will prove either that Bush won the election or that there was fraud. Said failure to let the process go through to completion caused millions of Americans to believe that the election was stolen. Said bloggers did country a favor for doing what neither the press nor the major parties had the heart for.

I love the "hold the bloggers accountable" line.
Yes, Susan, what we really need in this country are laws restricting the rights of people to say whatever they want on the internet. Especially when what they say aggravates the Right. Those damn bloggers. They're ruining our country! How can the Republicans do whatever they want if the bloggers keep talking about them???
That was a clearly biased report. I thought even Joe Trippi seemed taken a little taken aback by what the other two were saying.
After watching that Molinari woman, I experienced a little surge of fear. Seriously. She seemed like she was just barely suppressing intense rage about this stuff, and I really thought she meant it when she suggested that bloggers should be "held accountable" for criticizing the administration. I worry about my country when I think that people like that woman make up my Congress. I think I'm going to have nightmares tonight.
Oh, and by the way...I AM STARTING TO GET REALLY, REALLY ANNOYED BY THIS "FRINGE" DESIGNATION!!! I am a totally normal person who happens to read the internet, just like all the other thousands of normal internet readers I know. If you saw me on the street in the grocery store, you would not assume that I was some kind of "fringy" person. Goddammit. You know what I think the definition of "fringe" is these days? I think FRINGE = anybody who does their own research before they decide to believe what mainstream media tells them.

44. "Who Holds the Bloggers Accountable?" Geezzzzz |
|
Give me a break. The real question is who holds the media accountable for not responding immediately to the thousands (maybe millions) of Americans who have reported voter problems and disenfranchisement? How many reports will it take for them for them to get it? 20,000? 30,000? 40,000? I'm pretty sure we have many more then that by now if you add up all of the various groups who have journaling these incidents since November 2nd.
I thought journalism was about uncovering the truth and then communicating it to the public. But then again, I thought that being an American meant that every person voted and that every vote counted.

Trippi was given time to say what he wanted to say without being interrupted. Mattews didn't disagree with him that all the votes should be counted. Trippi came off soundng reasonble - that it was to everyone's advantage for all the votes to be counted/recounted. That way the President could claim a legitimate victory if it is rightfully his, and it would give the voters confidence, also. Obviously, all fo the reasons we want the vote recounted were presented also.

67. Susan Molinari - Drug Abuser |
|
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 08:57 PM by Spiffarino
http://www.johnmonty.com/cotw/cw960810.htmCreep of the Week - August 10, 1996
Susan MolinariThe current crop of baby boomer politicians may disagree on many issues, but they all seem to have one thing in common - a total inability to speak clearly about their own history of drug use. This seems to be related to the attributes that politicians of all generations have in common: hypocrisy, dishonesty, and the tendency to feed the voters whatever they will eat without gagging. Over the last few years, we've heard all kinds of cagy explanations for what happened 20 years ago in college, always festooned with disclaimer phrases such as "only a few times", "I experimented with it" and the obligatory "but now I know it was wrong." Of course, the classic line was Bill Clinton's "I didn't inhale", which will deservedly dog him forever on late night talk shows and Republican fund raisers.
. . . .
The latest politician to be haunted by a previous life of crime is Susan Molinari, Congresswoman from New York and the Keynote Speaker at next week's Republican convention. She had come out of the drug closet recently with a statement about smoking marijuana in college using all the above disclaimers and the matter was dropped. But this week, a New York TV station dug up a 1992 interview in which Susan didn't offer a tap dance around the issue, but just lied about it straight out, denying that she'd ever used drugs because she wasn't interested and because they weren't available. What's her explanation now for that lapse of memory? She "panicked" when first asked the question. Hey Susan, maybe those panic attacks are a result of your "experiments" in college. And you thought drugs were harmless fun!
