National Popular Vote Interstate Compact

Have you heard of the http://www.nationalpopularvote.com/">National Popular Vote Interstate Compact?

The basic idea is to get enough states with at least 270 electoral votes to pass this legislation, which would then require that the winner of the nationwide popular vote receive their state's electoral votes. Maryland and New Jersey have already passed it into law, and Illinois might do so as well soon. It will not effect the 2008 election, because not enough states will have passed it into law by then for it to go into effect.

I think that progressives should support this. It seems like a realistic way of weakening the anti-democratic Electoral College and preventing another 2000 type election.
