Summit County Republican Party Chairman Alex R. Arshinkoff has been bumped from the county's Board of Elections after serving 30 years.

Arshinkoff, who was up for reappointment this year, was nominated by the county's GOP, but Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, who by law approves board nominations, rejected it.

"It would be inappropriate to have him serve longer," Brunner said.

Brunner said Arshinkoff, an old-style political boss, was running his GOP machine out of elections board offices, threatening and intimidating board workers who balked at his orders...

Jaysus Christ. In my neck of the woods, they just voted to teach evolution in the schools! This if for real. It was headlines yesterday in all the Florida papers. I mean, WHAT THE HELL HAVE I BEEN DOING WASTING MY TIME IN FLORIDA ALL THESE YEARS!

It was past 2 a.m. when the kid left the bar and headed for home. Back from college for Christmas, he'd met up with his high school buddies at Annabell's, a neighborhood watering hole in Akron. Frustrated for reasons that no longer seem important, the 21-year-old Kent State student had been too annoyed to wait for a ride.

It wasn't long before he wished he had. It had been a white Christmas. The ground was still blanketed, early that morning of December 27, 2002; the air, frigid. Maybe a stranger would give him a lift.
