The BRAD BLOG Invited to Address U.S. Election Assistance Commission...
The BRAD BLOG Invited to Address U.S. Election Assistance Commission...

We were both pleased and mildly surprised to see the invitation arrive from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) a few weeks back, asking us to come to DC, on their dime, to participate this coming Thursday in a one day "Voting Advocate Roundtable Discussion" on the proposed 2007 federal Voluntary Voting System Guidelines (VVSG).

Our invitation, from EAC Chair Rosemary Rodriguez, and more thoughts on BRAD BLOG's participation in the process, follows at the link below...

1. Way to go, Brad!
I remember talking to you on the phone some time back, how easy and real that you came across.

And from what I have seen lately, you are now getting what is due you.

Tom

Yeah, a headache. No money. And silly accusations like the one below from Papau :-)

Other than that though, thanks, Tom! Doing what I can...

8. You won't get any of that nonsense from me.
:hi:

Give them a real earfull, if you can. Maybe if they hear from enough people they'll finally get a sense of how bad this is.

2. Pity you can't discuss audit standards since there is no Federal audit after you opposed it
Maybe next year - right

2008 just was not an important enough election to go against the advice of Bev Harris on HR 811

3. That's quite amusing...

Given the failure of Holt's much less imposing and mandate-free HR5036, which the WH was on record as going again, you are actually suggesting w/ a straight face that he would have signed HR811? In time for the 2008 election? (BTW, if you had bothered to pay attention to the legislation, you'd have seen that it wouldn't have kicked in until 2010 anyway, at earliest)

As to Bev Harris' advice, while I was WORKING WITH HOLT'S OFFICE ON THE VERY LANGUAGE OF THE BILL (WHICH YOU ACCUSE ME OF OPPOSING) BEFORE IT WAS INTRODUCED, of course I had no idea what Bev would think of it.

After it came out, Bev called to kill it. Of course, I never did. I called for it to be amended. Particularly after it had been gutted such that you're "audit standards" would have been worse than meaningless, and you would have had federally institutionalized secret software and DRE voting machines for decades to come.

So, um, you're welcome.

15. No.

Bev Harris had many serious and legitimate concerns about the poorly written, dangerous legislation -- most of which I shared -- and felt it was better to call for the bill to be defeated. I do not begrudge her that reasonable position, which she shared with many other Election Integrity advocates. I, on the other hand, called for the bill to be amended. Either way, it has, as of now, died.

And yes, she is very legit, and has facilitated and documented some of the most important, landmark findings in the history of the U.S. EI movement, as confirmed by publications who have reported her work, for example in Emery County, UT, such as NYTimes, AP, NPR, Newsweek, Time, USA Today and many more.

As well, she was also invited by the U.S. EAC to the "Voter Advocate" roundtable.

I'm sorry if you don't care for her -- and yes, Andy was a very close personal friend and advisor of mine, even throughout all of the worst (public and private) conflict with Bev -- but forwarding the fallacious meme that she is not "legit" does a disservice to the cause of Election Integrity and Reform in America to which she has been crucially vital for many years, and continues to be. Whether you care for her on a personal level or not.

9. Glad to hear they're reaching out.

It's good to know they're listening.

And yes. Eyes wide open.

13. Question for Brad...
Were there election officials in the audience? If so, is a list available?

Thanks.

14. Answer from Brad...
As noted in the original, I asked e-voting and computer security expert Dr. Rebecca Mercuri to attend the roundtable on BRAD BLOG's behalf, though my written testimony to the panel is now linked via here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x501303

She reported to me last night, after the roundtable, that there were 20 or so folks in the audience, including many attorneys, 3 of the 4 EAC commissioners and Michelle Mulder (from Rush Holt's office). She didn't mention any Election Officials. Though they are participating in their own EAC roundtable on the same issue today. Those officials are listed here: http://www.eac.gov/News/meetings/4-25-08-election-official-roundtable-discussion

Sadly, some of the nation's best election officials, folks like Ion Sancho (Leon County, FL) and Freddie Oakley (Yolo County, CA), were not invited to attend.
