Elections inspector gets role in documentary

A veteran Westmoreland County elections inspector, a vociferous opponent of touch-screen voting machines, appears in a recently released documentary, "Uncounted -- The New Math of American Elections."

Marybeth Kuznik, executive director of VotePA, a statewide nonpartisan alliance promoting voting rights and election integrity, has attended several screenings of the documentary to talk about her role to voter rights groups in Harrisburg, State College and other cities.

The documentary by Emmy Award-winning Nashville producer David Earnhardt attempts to prove voting machine fraud was prevalent in the 2004 presidential election and again in 2006.

"I'm hoping to present a showing back in Westmoreland sometime in September, but it's not been finalized," said Kuznik of Penn Township. Kuznik, who is nearing two decades serving as an election inspector in the township, was among the plaintiffs in a 2006 lawsuit against Westmoreland commissioners. They purchased computerized, touch-screen voting machines in 2005 to replace the 45-year-old lever voting system. Although the lawsuit failed to halt implementation of the touch-screen system, Kuznik remains wary.

"Our tourism slogan in Pennsylvania is, 'The State of Independence,' but with officials continuing to ignore the dangers of paperless electronic voting machines, perhaps the slogan should be changed to "State of Denial," Kuznik said.
