Kerry breaks his silence (from Why is Kerry Silent?)
Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 08:09 PM by intelle
JoanneNH posted this in Why is Kerry silent? I thought it was important enough to have it's own topic.

The link is an interview he gave today to a Boston reporter. Even though the reporter thought that Kerry was still experiencing disappointment, I heard something different. I heard anger at what happened, and perhaps a resolve to keep fighting.

Kerry mentioned more than once that "The votes are still being counted".

I was wondering what others here will think about the interview.

Thank you JoanneNH!!

2. Just read a thread on that - my take too
"In his first extensive interview since his Nov. 2 defeat, Kerry was asked by the Fox News affiliate in Boston about running again in 2008 and reminded the questioner that Ohio is still counting votes from 2004."

15. I especially liked this part
"You know they haven't finished counting the votes in Ohio yet, and so it is way to early to start talking about another race. But I will tell you this -- I'm far from finished fighting. I'm passionate about these issues. As I say, 50,000 votes and we'd be in a different place with a different conversation." :-)

35. I may be wrong but I do not recall hearing him say 'Ohio'
...when he said something to the effect "They are still counting votes". They really edited the video carefully, and the propaganda at the end, by the interviewer, covered tracks real good, by implying Mr. Kerry "knows" nothing is going to change the results of the election, no matter what happens in Ohio. VERY interesting and very strange, IMO.

68. "read between the lines..."
That was the problem with Kerry's candidacy. You had to "read between (his) lines" to figure out where he was coming from - and then the best you got was an educated/uneducated guess. Take Iraq, for example.......................................................

Can anyone ever be that sure of oneself when Kerry is speaking? Reading between the lines with him is kind of like trying to read someone's mind. Even if you're a genuine psychic you could get lost.

87. The benefits of not unconceding yet...
*Gets media off his back.
*Avoids fixing image in public mind of 'sore loser'
*Avoids giving Bush/Rove a target to punch at.
*Prevents stock market impact due to uncertainty.
*Gives him breathing room to, dare I say it, think about a cabinet and rest before taking office in January.. ;)

Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 08:21 PM by Kralizec
Listen to the way he is talking... he is still campaigning. And he is getting to talk about all the trash they pulled in the election. He has let the repugs go home in Ohio and has groundwork there, and now he is slowly laying groundwork in the media. When the time is right, the repugs will be caged out. A little of their own medicine. Poetic really, if this ends up being true... just my 2 cents...

26. kraze-
i dunno. i just dunno.

if he's preparing a counter-offensive, which i seriously doubt, the greens wouldn't have had to hump the electorate for the chump change to contest ohio- all it would've taken was a phone call or two to get the $$$.

Not a peep from anyone else in the party. anywhere. about the failure to count votes.

i'd read between the lines, but i think this is a pretty closed message.

i'll be the first to publically self-flagellate if "the party" is going to do anything more than whimper and roll.

i mean, how realisitc is it going to be to fight this thing in the courts in December/January, and set up a new administration- the CIA is being purged, State Department lifers are being given walking papers- so much damage is being done right now that he'd spend the first year just trying to put something back together.

don't get me wrong, i want more than anything in the world to have a president kerry- I have young kids. but nothing that I have seen to date, from the behind the scenes bargaining going on for another "moderate" DNC chair to Kerry sittinmg on $45 friggin' million in campaign funds yet to be spent (couldn't Betty Castor have used some of that cash...) leads me to believe that we've (the collective leadership) grown testicles.

how do you tell the difference between playing it close to the vest and being copmatose?

I giuess you tell that difference on December 13th. Anybody have any press conferences scheduled?

Okay, where's the DU'er who had the dream that Kerry was in a classroom, walking about as if he were still campaigning?

And then we have this interview, with Kerry talking "as if he were still campaigning."

50,000 votes means a different outcome, is how I read his message. Very interesting. Very interesting indeed.

30. It is as if he has been EXILED......
We are all asking "Where is Kerry--Why doesn't he come forward?" etc.... Well, Why is no mainstream, nationally broadcast news channel interviewing him? And why did they TAPE this one? Are they afraid of what he might say in a live interview? And at the end, the interviewer was asked by the anchor if Kerry mentioned Ohio... and she said "oh yes, several times" --but yet they CUT that from his interview, because I do not recall hearing him say the word OHIO once. And the interviewer was covering tracks at the end, and said basically that Kerry realizes that no matter what is going on in Ohio, he LOST. That is not the message I got from Sen. Kerry here. I think there is a lockdown on anyone interviewing him....

64. Since this was a New England (NECN) interview...perhaps...
he hasn't allowed himself to particepate in the Nationals. After watching the interview in Vermont on NECN, the analysts had made comments indicating that Kerry may have felt some "pressure" to come out a bit. Considering, that NECN is very much rooted in Boston and the audience is primarily NE based, this makes sense. He really didn't sound as though "things" were over yet!

:-)

112. In wonder if Kerry felt pressured to come out, OR...
...if Massachusetts media felt pressure to give him some air time. I mean REALLY: Millions of us want to see him and hear from him. The whole thing is so weird! This man just finished a 2-year campaign for the Presidency, and his "loss" was so close in a number of swing states, yet NO one in mainstream TV is interviewing him? Considering they do ANYTHING for ratings, this is suspicious to me.

120. Re: Was Kerry pressured to speak....
I saw the entire interview last night. You basically know what John Kerry said during the interview. After the interview, there was a discussion about the interview with two commentators who personally know John Kerry. They both said it was too soon for him to be speaking in public because of the depth of sadness he's feeling. They said the only reason he agreed to speak to anyone is because he's received over a thousand requests from around the world. Kerry decided he'd speak to reporters in his home state first. One of the comentators said that Kerry had been campaigning for about two years and is physically and emotionally exhausted. He said it's going to take him months to get over the hump. He also said that "at 5 o'clock and at 6 o'clock on Election Night, John Kerry truly believed he was going to be President Kerry. He was even talking about putting up new curtains in the White House." I don't know how serious he was about new curtains, but I think those words were used to get across the point of how positive John Kerry was that he had won. I know how upset I still feel and I can just imagine John Kerry's mental state right now. He must be so depressed but you have to get it to him; he's trying very hard to chug along.

campaign speeches are drilled into your head and takes time to get it out of your head. So I wouldn't read to much into that.

What is clear though is his comment on the counting of votes not being in and this makes it premature to think of 2008.

Also he seemed to focus on how close this the race was. And even mentioned he had more votes in all the battleground states than you know who. I take this as a way to say he does have a popular vote in this.

and I don't think it is "reading into" anything. Straight from the horses mouth.....we are not done counting is the message I got because that is exactly what he said. AND, as I have posted all along, I DO believe he is being "covert" and not "loud" about counting all the votes. I still believe he is doing it correctly. He knows he better have solid proof if he turns out to have had more votes.

45. I was wondering about that line
He said something like "the votes aren't even counted yet, to early to start talking about 08"

Ok, so is he trying to tell us that when the votes ARE counted, if he wins then yes, he will run in 08, but if he loses, he won't run, and it is too early to tell cause they ain't counted yet?

Who knows, I just keep reminding myself that THIS MAN AIN'T STUPID. He's gotta know what's goin on right now...

89. you certainly can get an amen!
This morning on AAR I heard both Wes Clark and Jimmy Carter talk about how following a religious faith (including the Christian faith that Bush purportedly espouses) means that you care for those less fortunate, not that you take advantage of your power to exploit others (neither one of them used those exact words, but it's basically what they meant). So I think a big Democratic AMEN is perfectly appropriate.

71. Found The Interview
Very encouraging.

50,000 votes separates the outcome.

I see Kerry as a person working from logic. We know what the vote total is expected to come out to. He is not making any accusation of dirty tricks. However, should evidence turn up that something is not legit then the full force of legal and political actions will be forthcoming.

I don't think this is over by a long shot.
Just my take on the video.

Didn't see the original broadcast but the rerun clip listed.

72. Thanks for posting this interview!!
I'm sure he's looking forward to Thursdays recount in his home state followed by the Ohio flip-flop! This is true nail biting time. What with BBV digging up scandolous stuff tonight in Volusia county, the FBI probably investigating the Florida school, mysterious extra counts here and there for Bush and company. How long can the mainstream media stay mute. Something else, I don't know if any of you guys watched Bush's announcement of CondorSleezas new job but I got the wierdest vibe from it. He seemed different. Believe it or not he seemed more evil. The press pool were quiet as a mouse and they reminded me of school children that were afraid of getting in trouble. I was wondering if maybe in the back of his mind he knows the shits gonna hit the fan and he's planning to get truly crazy to try to hang on to the presidency. Maybe the pressure is getting to Mr. Mandate.

ohio recount process has begun..same with north carolina..nader lost by 350thousand in NH..he bought a recount because its cheap..and to prove the evoting innacuracies..the reason theyre waiting..taking their time is because (just like in 2000) the bush camp could stomp any recount headlines with 'we're in fallujah' biggest invasion since baghdad etc etc..recount talk..stomped. so kerry is being brilliant, quiet. theyre working. and waiting for the right time. he and nader both. rocknroll..and a concession speech is not a legal-binding anything...its just that..its a speech...just chill. its gonna be ok.

90. ok, here is a transcript
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 12:36 AM by Faye
i skipped the intro and just went straight to the interview -

King: Senator Kerry, congratulations on a well fought campaign. Polls showed you were tied in the final weeks - showed that you won 2 if not 3 of the debates…all three…plenty of money to fight the republicans. Why did you lose?

Kerry: Well that’s for punditry and others to decide, obviously I didn’t get enough votes in the end. We were 50,000 votes, approximately, moving the other way, short, in one state. That’s a very close race. No one’s ever beaten an incumbent president in a time of war. And ‘terror terror terror’ was being thrown at people in a huge, in a huge, negative campaign. I’m very proud of what we did. I don’t look backwards and say well, we did a lot of things that were rather remarkable. Brought out more people at any time in history, I won 57 million votes, plus, still counting – more than any person who’s ever run for president and lost in history. We turned out more people, more states than any time. If you look at the battleground states we actually had a more cumulative vote than George Bush did. We just didn’t get it all in the right state. And so, I’m not gonna worry about that. What I’m concerned about now is continuing the battle for the things I fought for in the campaign. Healthcare for Americans that’s affordable, jobs that pay more than the jobs going overseas, fiscal responsibility, energy policy that makes us independent and safer, and restoring America’s strength and reputation in the world. That’s why I’m here, and I’m very grateful to the people of Massachusetts for the privilege of being here and for the support that they gave me through this race.

King: Are you the last Democrat from Massachusetts, the last ‘liberal’ from the Northeast who will ever be able to run for president in our lifetime?

Kerry: Absolutely not. Why? I became within 50,000 votes of winning, against a president in a time of war, no one’s ever beaten a president in a time of war. Massachusetts was not an issue in this campaign. People need to dispel themselves of that immediately. What was difficult in this campaign was breaking through in terms of the negative, unbelievable onslaught and distortions and smears and other things. And we tried to run a very positive campaign about America’s future. I’m very proud of it.

King: And for a crucial sector of people, the election came down not to the war, not to the economy but to moral values. How surprised were you by that – and do the Democrats need to find a new strategy to better deal with, work with the Christian right – to better deal with issues like abortion and gay marriage?

Kerry: I have the same position as George Bush on gay marriage. Same position. What they did was exploit it in ways that we didn’t or don’t do. Now, do we need to do a better job of communicating what our position may or not be, well then the answer is yes, probably. But I refuse to believe - you know that’s not what this race was decided on. And I beg to differ with those people.

King: You don’t buy into the idea that moral values….

Kerry: Oh it was part of some people’s votes, but the predominant issue was the war and terror. That was the predominant one. And if you look at the impact of the Osama bin Laden tape in the last days – and you look at the impact of the Chechnyan rebels in the school in Russia – you’ll find a very real impact on people in the war on terror. And this will come out as the days go on. That’s not what this race is about, I mean that’s not what is important right now. What’s important right now is we got some real fights here in Washington that make a difference to the lives of the people in Massachusetts and the country. And the question is, what direction is George Bush gonna go in? I want healthcare that’s affordable for all Americans and I want children to be covered by healthcare. If George Bush wants to work at that we can find some common ground and make progress. But if they’re unwilling to do that, we’re gonna you know, have some fights.

King: Your brother says it’s conceivable that you would run for president in 4 years. Have you ruled that out?

Kerry: I haven’t ruled anything out, I haven’t ruled anything in. Look, they haven’t finished counting the votes yet – we’d be talking about the race 4 years from now and it’s WAY to premature. But I’m not gonna rule anything out cuz I’ve said previously. What I’m here to do is fight for the things that I fought for in the course of this campaign. And the people of Massachusetts have been just wonderful. And the support they’ve given me, the privilege they’ve given me of running for president, being in the senate….and I intend to live up to the high standards of our state. And no one in our state should think that the state or what we stand for had anything to do with the outcome of this race.

99. I just realized what my horrible post-"election" depression is akin to
When I saw JK's face and heard his voice, I felt like I was seeing someone I loved who had died. I'm not normally one to adore a politician (and I certainly don't adore his "I agree with Bush on gay marriage" crap)...but I actually cried after watching this.

I have been literally ill for much of the past two weeks (debilitating headaches; will actually be going in for a CT scan), and I think it's from holding in this tremendous well of grief that is exactly like grief I've had over the loss of a loved one.

I do love his calm voice. Anyone see "Going Upriver"? It's amazing to hear him speak so calmly and eloquently in those Senate hearings.

Faye, I would highly recommend it if it comes out on Netflix or elsewhere. Even if it ends up being just a footnote in history. :( But I have to say, JK's "freudian slip" and "still counting" comments did give me a tiny glimmer of hope. Right now I'll take whatever I can get.

126. I'm enjoying the feeling that comes from reading this interview,,,
But I have had tremendous personal distress over this election also, like everyone else on here. It would not be near as bad for me if I was sure that it was legitmate. Would still be a bummer to think that the idiot could have won the PV, etc... but the idea that the whole thing is a farce and no one is even paying attention and so on has been very depressing, because it makes you feel powerless. So although I am heartened by this interview I am very much afraid to get my hopes up in any way because I was crushed on election night because of the exit polls and thinking that Kerry had won. I feel the same way about the Kerry Movie. I have wanted to see it but I think that at this point it would just be heartbreaking to me. I can see how this could have felt like someone who died was coming back. This whole thing seems surreal even now. I hope and pray that this turns around. It would be so dramatic and so good for our Democracy and for the whole world.

he speaks so clearly and has a great command of just about any issue.
it's not just now either, but from the time he was a young man in college and back from the military.

Kerry as a teen and in his 20's was far better at speaking and had much more knowledge than Bush does today as can be seen in the video from his college days and the senate testimony he gave.

i always say if only everyone who voted (and didn't vote) could just see him as he is. without the media spin. his best moments were when we could just see him such as the convention speech and debates.

107. Anyone else notice him say
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 06:05 AM by RunningFromCongress
"I got more votes in florida than bill clinton or al gore when they won it"?

I thought that was funny, and that line means he's not a believer in first counts, that means something.

111. Yeah, I noticed that too!
I think there were so many things in the interview that he said without saying anything. :bounce:

119. But he's not putting his money where his subtle hints are
These subtle hints are nice, but what about the $45 million dollars we gave him for post-election problems? These fraud audits in machines around the country may cost millions of dollars. That is our money and Kerry is sitting on it, according to Cobb.

Until he comes up with the money to support us through this, I am unimpressed with the desperate hope with which people are looking at his words through a microscope. These straws are like the words of a lover who can't believe she's been ditched - looking for every subtle hint that her man still lovers her ...

122. I'm not aware that Kerry has "ditched" us
I can see the correlation you're trying to make, but I think the comparison is flawed. Kerry conceded, because for all *outward* intents and purposes, he has lost the election. He did not turn and say, "I don't really want to be with you anymore, baby. It's been fun, but I need to see other people." Nor did he say, "Eh, fuck counting the votes, tra-la-la-la-la" and go traipsing off into the woods with a big bag full of money. He has said that he is waiting until the votes are counted. He has said that his legal staff is looking into irregularities in Ohio. (Which I would imagine takes money...but that's just a guess.)

I respect that many people feel abandoned by Kerry because of his choice to concede so quickly; it's a perfectly understandable response. I'm just waiting until all the evidence is in before I decide whether my president was taken away from me or has simply left me in the dirt after a good fuck.

You don't need to be impressed by my desperate hope. That's not what it's there for. It's there for me to have something to keep me going until I feel a final, just outcome has been reached, or undeniable evidence that there will be no justice (or that there was no injustice to begin with). Until then, I reserve judgment on what is or is not happening now, and I reserve the right to have hope.

When there is no more hope, I will have to concede, myself, that democracy's darkest hours are upon us.

121. Kerry is doing everything right
Put yourself in his position--if he was up in arms, demanding a recount in Ohio and donating his campaign money, and nothing came of it, what would that do to his credibility and to the connections and reputation he has built over his many years in the senate and his chances for a run in 2008? Kerry is above all a man who can't get enough information. He looks at an issue from every facet and not just in a moral/ethical sense but in a strategic and political one as well. As President that could drive us crazy, but that's the way he is. He is a deeply intellectual politician who I'd be willing to bet plays a mean game of chess. Let us donate our chump change to the Greens anf Libertarians to get Ohio recounted. Let us support Bev Harris' audits. If this thing turns for Kerry, it is much more gracious of him to thank us all from the bottom of his heart and assume the mantle, and if it doesn't, then he hasn't harmed himself in any way. And if he does win, think of how loyal all of those who have worked to support this election will be to him--precisely because a grass roots effort would have prevailed. It won't have come from the top down. Kerry knows that if you empower the people, they are your allies forever. You can bet he knows exactly what is going on in Ohio and Florida. He's a cagey person. Maybe too much so, but that's the way he works. I don't think we can expect him to publicly support this. Plus, he's got an emotionally conservative streak, very reserved--and I don't think we can expect to see him join in, but he is watching closely. He is pissed, but its subtle. Well, that's my 5 cents and I may be rationalizing, but this is one way to look at it!

123. Perhaps another hidden message...
Hi, I'm new to this group. I thought I'd put my two cents in. After watching Kerry's interview, I think I read something in it that may not have been noticed. A few people have mentioned that Kerry said if there was a 50,000 vote difference things might have been different. I think what may have happened is that Kerry/Edwards thought (hoped?) that the vote in Ohio was going to be even closer than it turned out to be (like Florida 2000). I think that maybe they thought there was going to be an automatic recount in Ohio. I read online somewhere that Ohio law makes a recount mandatory if one candidate loses by one half of one percent. I'm not much at math but I figure that if about 50,000 of Ohio's vote had gone to Kerry instead of Bush then the percentage would have been pretty close. Maybe close enough for an automatic recount. Maybe that's why Edwards said that it wouldn't be over until every vote was counted. If there had been an automatic recount then Kerry would not have looked like he was trying to spoil the election.

Anyway, that's one possibility that I thought of. The Moderate Independent has an interesting article about how Kerry really is still in the fight.

127. We need Kerry to be strong
If he's exhausted, so are we. If he's depressed, so are we. But we're still fighting because we have no choice. A lot of us are also financially stretched, maybe our jobs are jeopardized because we've put so much work into defeating *, maybe we haven't cleaned house for 2 years . At least Kerry is rich and has a job. Come on, Kerry. Buck up man, we need you to turn that boat around and save the world.
