5. ES&S makes the tabulating machines in Iowa
Here's an interesting story from Nov 3rd:

http://www.theiowachannel.com/politics/3888493/detail.html

<snip>

Voting Machine Breaks, Holds Up Final Iowa Tally

The machine that scans the ballots and counts the votes broke down, leaving Greene County to be one of the last in the state to change colors, from Democratic blue to Republican red.

"We were dead in the water" for a while, said Greene County auditor Jane Heun.

The culprit was a 15-year old ballot counting machine that went haywire at about 11 p.m. Tuesday.

22. Isn't that the same time the exit poll network went down...?
I read in the Washington Post, of all places, that the exit poll central computer crashed at about 11pm EST and stayed down for a couple hours.

Probably coincidence. Add it to the pile, I guess.

The numbers are sooo close! It just crazy, not that it would decide the election. But seems like it would be worth another look.

9. I think it's too late - I seem to remember the deadline was really
early, we have a danger of doing the same with Florida, I think that the deadline to contest is Wednesday -although there was some discussion as to whether or not certification there was official.

"The Register obtained final results through a survey of 99 county auditors. The numbers were then verified with those submitted to state election officials. Iowa Democratic Secretary of State Chet Culver was to release final statewide results and voter turnout numbers at a news conference Wednesday. However, the numbers will remain unofficial until certified Nov. 29."

43. That's odd
There was a link on the IA Secy of State's website that said that the deadline for recount request was Nov 12. The link is now gone. Either the Register has it's facts wrong or the IA allows a chalange before the results are certified.

Regardless, a recount has to be requested by a candidate. Doesn't look like that will happen.

11. Ok so who can we contact to request a recount or second look in Iowa?
We can certainly raise the money if all that is needed is $1000.

Is this something we should approach Ralph Nader or the Green Party about? It would be strange to think that they did not consider this before however. Are we missing something because it sure looks obvious to me that it's close enough to have asked for a recount. Anyone know how to reach any of their attorneys?

30. I found something weird...
i decided to try myself to do a little math...NOW I am not a MATH person so I am sure that I am missing something, but I tried a smaller county. This county voted for Clinton.. Yet Bush in the last 2 elections. Ok so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb Yet... The Population strikes me as odd. Please someone tell me what I am missing here.

Thanks much.

To me it looks like there couldn't be that many registered voters in that county, yet... the census numbers are 2003... I know I am missing something but what??? Unless the county grew?? The odd thing is that, how can there be that many registered to vote?
Population census of 2003 7,922 I believe this number fell from the previous census. So unless there was major growth in this county...which I doubt, once you get south of Des Moines it starts to get pretty poor..or farming communities.
OK so registered voters....6051 That seems really high? doesn't it? The actual votes and such are below, to be quite honest I have found this in a lot of the southern counties. I will do a few more tonight. Thanks for looking

So The votes were casted like this (as of 11/8/04)
Kerry - 1833
Bush -2393
Misc - 29
Grand total Votes cast = 4255
http://www.sos.state.ia.us/pdfs/elections/2004/general/UnofficialCanvasResults.pdf

REGISTERED VOTERS
Active Dems - 1290 Inactive - 81 =1371
Active Reps - 2393 Inactive - 86 = 2479
No Party - 2011 Inactive - 190 = 2201
Grand total of Registered voters = 6051
http://www.sos.state.ia.us/PDFs/elections/2004/General/VoterRegReport.pdf

Ok no problem I can deal with all of that...
So then I decided... well lets look at Adair county...

http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/19/19001.html
Population, 2003 estimate 7,922
Persons under 18 years old, percent, 2000 = 23.9%

39. Yes! All of 'em. All Fifty!
We need to promote action in every state. Challenges for discrimination. Writ of Mandamus for failure to run a fair election or provide the transparency required for citizens to have confidence in the results. Independent groups doing audits. Whatever is needed to kick off comprehensive investigation of the results in every state.

Our most fundamental principle, obtaining the consent of the governed in fair, open, and lawful elections, is being crushed under the weight of fascist thinking. We are forgetting that our election laws have been developed to ensure that elections results reflect OUR will. The law is not a static authority to which we are subservient. The law is ultimately a human enterprise. We must challenge fascist thinking and remember that We the People are the ultimate authority in any democracy.

Notion to Challenge
--------------------
The burden of proof is on us. We must find and correct enough "glitches" to change the result.

Simple Truth; Moral Position
-----------------------------
The voting systems and practices used in the conduct of this past election are so clearly flawed that the results in nearly every state are wide open to corruption by systematic vote suppression, data manipulation, human and machine error, and consequently, willful fraud. Demonstrable errors and anomalous patterns of result have rendered all "official" tallies suspect. More tragically, the systems and processes implemented by "experts" now make it impossible for us to rule out corruption without further investigation and audit.

When you have suspect results, there are two possibilities:

1. The results reflect the will of the voters.

2. The results are contrary to the will of the people.

And you have two choices:

A. Accept the results.

B. Reject the results.

Our founding principle, that our leaders serve only with the consent of the governed, dictates that we minimize the chance of 2-A, accepting results that are contrary to the will of the people, therefore, we must have a "presumption of bad results," and the burden is on the state to prove the results to be good.

This is analogous to the presumption and burden in criminal law. In that case, our principles dictate that we minimize the chance that we convict the innocent, therefore we have a "presumption of innocence” and the burden in on the state to prove guilt. (See http://unioncountyfordemocracy.org/files/election2004_burden_of_proof.htm).

The preservation of our government demands that we have confidence in our elections. With the current systems and processes, we cannot achieve that confidence without further investigation and audit. The moral burden must now be on each state to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that their results are accurate and lawfully obtained. There is no other patriotic option.

For more notions to challenge and the simple truths and moral positions that can be used to challenge them, see http://www.unioncountyfordemocracy.org/files/restoring_sanity_point_by_point.html.

21. Bubble charts Iowa: central tabulators worse than precinct based totals
Take a look at these! Vote growth (2000 to 2004) for counties with ES&S and CENTRAL tabulation significantly favored Bush while those which were PRECINCT-BASED did not. (Note: these vote totals are from the SOS website on November 10th.) (Also note: chart bubble sizes cannot be compared across multiple charts; sorry -- the program sets the size based on largest bubble = 1.)

23. So where do we go from here???
I am in iowa but I am leaving for Phoenix for 3 months.. I would love to see them recount the votes in Iowa and question the state about all the non-counted absentee ballots..

I hope they are open on Friday!!

32. Isn't the Governor a Democrat?
Vilsack - and he wanted to head the DNC? Help me understand where he is on all of this in his own state for heaven's sake...

25. We need a hand recount of the whole country
before anyone is sworn into anything.

Nothing less will do.

48. Election nite I saw 2,200 votes for Nader in a small county...
impossible number for small Boone County. This was on CNN site, a secondary source but another DUer confirmed my find. It was later changed to zero and if there was hanky panky going on with the tabulators kerry would only need another 2,800 votes to switch to him from Bush to win the state.
