8.1 million Gore voters didn't bother voting this month
While only 600,000 Bush-2000 voters were apathetic.

At least that's what you have to conclude from CNN's exit poll data.

When asked who you voted for in 2000, 17% didn't vote, 43% voted for Bush (0.43 x 116M = 49.9M), and 37% voted for Gore (0.37 x 116M = 42.9M). (Three percent apparently didn't understand the question because the total only adds up to 97%...)

If this is not clearly showing exit poll altering to fit the final totals, I don't know what would. I simply can't imagine I live in a country where 16% of the voters for a man who literally had the election stolen out from under him (and we come to find out later actually won) by an imbecilic fascist were TOO APATHETIC TO BOTHER VOTING, while the imbecilic fascist only lost only 1.2% of his previous voters to apathy.

Does anyone have unaltered exit poll data on this question?

1. I don't buy that
Voter turnout was high and I'm sure most people who voted for Gore in '00 voted this time too.

2. So, exit polls are only legit when the outcome
is favorable to the republicans.

They are bad because they show bunnypants losing. NO! They are good because it shows christian voters won the election for bunnypants! NO! They are bad becasue they are not accurate! WRONG! They are good because it shows Bush won because Gore voters didn't turn out!

WTF. I am sick of being played by the media. We are to believe only the spin that favors douchebags.

3. Well, if that's true (which I seriously doubt)
then it means Bush not only beat us by 3.5 million votes, but that he somehow managed to produce 10 million new voters, while Kerry created 14 million new ones!

4. But it doesn't match
Because they said the reason the exit polls didn't match the votes is because they weren't getting Bush voters. The only explanation for that bizarre number is that they got more Bush voters than Kerry voters. At the least it shows they did, in fact, get the Bush voters. I find that 37% hard to believe too. The 3%, maybe they were Nader/Buchanan/Browne voters.

5. D'oh!
That's clearly it. The 3% is for "other" candidates. As you can tell, I haven't had my coffee this morning.

Does anyone have unaltered exit poll data for this question though?

7. I don't think so
We really need that polling data, right down to each location the polls were taken.

6. strange figures
OK, of the 24% of respondents who said their candidate "will bring about change" 5% voted for Bush (uh....never mind)

on the opinion of the Bush administration: "Angry" and "Dissatisfied" beat out "Satisfied" and "Enthusiastic" by 1% - sure sounds to me like they voted for Bush.... no wait - it sounds to me like it matches the Presidential Exit Polls pre-manipulation

under "policy toward same sex couples": 25% said 'legally marry' and 35% said 'civil unions' which left 37% saying 'no legal recognition.' So again, the mandate for "morality" is kind of thrown on its ear. not only is this issue fairly evenly split, but only a third or so are against gay couples having at least civil union protection status. While I think people are people and all should have the same rights, this is interesting and again gives me hope that not as many jack-boot homophobes exist as I had thought.

8. *IF* we had equal numbers of Bush* voters and Gore voters . . .
. . . then Kerry would have gotten 50.9% of the vote and Bush would have gotten 48.7% of the vote. (This is assuming 17% didn't vote, 40% voted for Bush in 2000, 40% voted for Gore in 2000, and 3% did something else, and that they split for Bush, Kerry, and Nader in the same way within each category).

I too find it difficult to believe that the Gore voters didn't turn out. Of course, it's possible that people lied about who they voted for -- a lot of people think it reflects on them personally if they didn't back the "winner".

9. The % increase in voters is only 10%
so a 17% "didn't vote in 2000" voter turnout is impossible.

10. In the same exit polls
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 05:51 PM by Capn Sunshine
we learned that voters were motivated by "moral values" What they fail to mention is they were similarly motivated by "War in Iraq". "The economy" and "Terrorism vs Rights". Now , cherry picking is one thing, but this is causing a hysterical reaction here and elsewhere.

And if the exit polls were wrong or inaccurate, why are they being cited as precise as a laser when it comes to voter motivation?

Wait, don't tell me.

12. Right
They like the part of the exit polls that tells them what they want. Good point.

Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 10:34 PM by Justathought
how did Gore get the popular vote from these figures in 2000? How can you get a higher percentage and lose the popular vote? As to this election, how come the millions who voted for Kerry exceded the amount of votes Gore receieved in 2000?:hurts:
