Vote totals fail tally in 29 Gaston precincts
11/18/2004 11:24 AM
By: Associated Press

(GASTONIA) - The number of ballots doesn't match the number of voters in more than half of Gaston County's precincts and election officials say they didn't know about the problem.

The Charlotte Observer reviewed the election results and concluded that some voters may have voted twice or some voters' ballots weren't counted. Problems are found in 29 of the county's 46 precincts.

Gaston County Elections Director Sandra Page says she didn't know about the problems and blames them on poll workers who didn't follow instructions.

At one precinct, workers signed in 42 more people than the number of ballots recorded on electronic voting machines. At another precinct there were 81 more ballots collected than people who signed in with officials.

State elections officials say they'll look into the problem.

More funny numbers from all these 'reliable' machines that were supposed to solve all our problems. Yeah, right.

4. These elections were rigged EVERY possible way...
Including manipulation of the central tabulating software.

For this year: Recounts where paper verification exists

For the future: paper ballots hand counted by scrutineers. Totals reported IN THE OPEN, precinct by precinct on election night.

5. Is Sandra Page one of those "party of personal responsibility" people?

8. DUers "out in front" of the news, again !
Ain't it funny how several DUers had previously pointed-out the monkey-business in Gaston County BoE? I wish I could remember their screen names right now, but anyhow - Kudos to the DUers who beat the AP to the Gaston County story!

11. This is HUGE because this is the first paper to uncover specific error
Isn't it? Haven't all the others been found by activists or the election workers or voters themselves?

The Charlotte Observer needs some love letters.

12. Gastonia
I have a friend that teaches in the Charlotte School District that lives in Gastonia. She said that there was a huge buzz from the African-American community about voting this year. Could this be why there is so much discrepency in the voting totals? We all know who gets the majority of the undervotes.
