League of women voters press release 11/18
is this something that could get into mainstream media?

WASHINGTON, DC – “The League of Women Voters is deeply concerned about voting irregularities in the 2004 election.  The appropriate officials must fully investigate these concerns through open and public processes.  Election officials should look into problems quickly and thoroughly and fix what proves to be wrong.  Transparency and a willingness to look into potential problems will strengthen voter confidence and ultimately improve our electoral system.

1. As a press releas they all have access to it but...
here in the "heartland", I'm 99.9% sure it won't be covered. ABC,NBC, CBS, FOX aren't going to waste 15 precious seconds with it either.

It's up to us.

2. This is important too!
“Finally, the League calls on every voter who cast a provisional ballot to find out whether their ballot was counted.  The provisional ballot counting process is still ongoing and must be monitored.  But every voter who cast a provisional ballot has the right, under the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), to know whether it is counted, and, if it is not counted, why it is not counted.  States are required to have a toll-free hotline or Internet system so voters can get this information about their ballot."

also from the LOWV statement. Check your votes people!

7. So does that mean that...
Voters who voted with a regular ballot don't have the right to know whether their vote counted or not? I'd like to know, especially since I voted on an optical-scanning ballot. If there is, where can I find out?

Sadly, doubting I ever will. And, since I live in Indiana, I doubt it even matters.

16. This is a very good point, and one that I feel needs to
be addressed as well. We should each be able to know if our vote was counted. If this is transparency, then this is what we need to aim for. Please don't let go of this thought! How would one know????

13. Provisional Status List
I made a list of BOE/SOS sites and provisional status hot-line numbers. Many states allow for on-line checks.

Let's see how much the MSM pays attention.

8. The League does not endorse anyone
I have never heard of them making any kind of endorsement for anyone anywhere. Locally they run our debates (when the Repubs agree to debate, which is rare) and are super cautious about appearing partisan.

14. Okay, thanks.
That makes them more credible in these types of situations, then.

18. WOW! You bet they are nou-partisan.. Read in
http://www.pbs.org/now/politics/debatehistory2.html
<excerpted from> The History of Presidential Debates: The Televised Years <NOW with Bill Moyers>
In 1988, the political parties wanted more control over the debates while the League insisted on protecting what they considered to be the debates' integrity. The Democratic and Republican parties signed a secretly negotiated "memorandum of understanding" that dictated everything from selection of the panelists, to the makeup of the audience, to banning follow-up questions. When they had agreed on all the details, the campaigns presented the document to the League. Accusing the two major parties of perpetrating a "fraud on the American voter," the League exposed the secret memo to the public. The struggle ended with the League of Women Voters withdrawing as sponsor of the general election debates, refusing to give its name to an event "controlled and scripted by the candidates' campaign organizations." The result: the parties got the kind of debates they wanted when the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), a nonprofit organization created by members of both major parties took over the management of the debates.

15. after what I just saw...
this editorial in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette referencing the mail they've been getting... gives a nod to "we sure do have to make sure the system works" but the headline is:

Editorial: Bush won / Out-of-luck conspiracy theorists should face facts

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04324/414067.stm

The use of the term Conspiracy Theorist without qualification really gets me. That's painting with a really broad brush... what, is a Tribune-Review staffer freelancing over there?

6. Maybe those idiots should have backed paper ballots sooner!
The League was one of the groups against requiring paper ballots until very recently (they changed their opinion just last June -- too late).

I am relieved to hear they are not now a part of the evil vote concealing and stealing threat to our democracy.
