Powell: 'Fraud and abuse' in United States vote
Thursday, November 25, 2004 Posted: 4:15 AM EST (0915 GMT)

Secretary of State Colin Powell calls for a review of the American election.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Wednesday said European nations do not accept the results of the American presidential election as legitimate, citing "credible reports of fraud and abuse."

The country's election commission has declared President George W. Bush the winner, beating opposition leader John Kerry by three percentage points.

Kerry said Wednesday evening that he did not recognize the official result and called for a countrywide "political strike."

Thousands of his supporters have protested for days in Cleveland.
"If the government does not act immediately and responsibly there will be consequences for our relationship, for United State's hopes for a Euro-Atlantic integration and for individuals responsible for perpetrating fraud," Powell said in a briefing at the State Department.

"We have been following developments very closely and are deeply disturbed by the extensive and credible reports of fraud in the election," he added. "We call for a full review of the conduct of the election and the tallying of election results."

Powell said it is "still not too late" for the government to remedy the situation. He warned that the world is watching and urged it to "seize the moment."

The secretary said he spoke with Presidential advisor Karl Rove (“Turdblossom”) earlier Wednesday to urge him to take advantage of suggestions by the two candidates that there may be a way to resolve the controversy.

The State Department issued a public announcement Wednesday to foreign citizens in or traveling to United States, warning of the possibility of "civil unrest and disturbances" over the disputed election.

"Foreign citizens resident in United States have therefore been urged to avoid areas affected by demonstrations and political rallies and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. Citizens have also been urged to assess the impact of these demonstrations might have on personal traffic and transportation needs," the department said.

Powell also cautioned Bush not to use any kind of force against the thousands of pro-Kerry demonstrators in Cleveland. He repeated that concern to Condoleeza Rice in a separate phone call, he said.

"We call on all sides to work to achieve a fair and just outcome without the use of force. We remind the executive branch authorities that they bear a special responsibility not to use or incite violence," the secretary said.

Powell said he also spoke with European Commission President Jose Barroso and High Representative Javier Solana, and said the United States supports an offer from Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski to mediate in the situation.

"Tomorrow is the EU-Russian summit in Europe, and I'm confident this will be a subject of discussion between the EU leadership and the Russians," the secretary said.

1. This is from the Onion right?
There is no way this could be for real.. no way in hell. If it is then my confidence in Powell just went up at least a million points.

25. What the...
Okay.. people its called IRONY. Most of us here at DU enjoy it.

There is no way if you were even close to being knowedgable about this admistration would you EVER even possibly think that Powell would say this, allude to it or even dream it.
He is still a pawn to his party.

It sucks but come on if your here I hope that you know how the freepers operate.

30. LOL
Irony is definitely a better word than humor, and it definitely came across. The poster and author definitely ended up with the intended impact of showing us how screwed up things really are, and how theoritcally they should actually be. It is a reminder to us about why our efforts are so important and how much remains to be done, which of course is a tremendously important and fitting concept.

In that context THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE RIGHT FORUM FOR IT TO BE POSTED IN.

Thank you as always, TIA, for posting it.....

18. I don't think it is funny either
This was a major letdown. Maybe if it were put in a different forum, or if the headline came with a warning it would have gone over better. The situation we are in is way too serious, we are up against forces and powers we may not be able to overcome, and it is hard enough to keep optimistic and motivated without teases like this. I am PO'd at the person who posted this.

You have the right of course to be upset BUT think about it.. use all your rationalization and decide if Powell would EVER say anything like this or allude to anything like this. With all the knowledge that you have, you know that this WOULD NEVER HAPPEN.

Sucks but its true.

I got so excited I said praise the Lord. (Which I dont say normally) Then I realized I had been geeked. Didn't read the whole thing. CRABBY now but i'll get over it. Powell is a complete hypocrite, and there are plenty of quotes to prove it, but what does it matter if mainstream media is too busy learning to goosestep...

but as is people are so tense right now its easy to skim it and take the way you and I did the first time through. It would be great to have a humor forum. Since we don't, at least don't sucker punch us.

14. I just sent this letter to the editor of our local paper
How is it Mr. Colin Powell cannot accept the results of the Ukrainian elections because the exit polls didn't match the election results, but he can accept the results of the elections here in the United States when the exit polls showed Kerry winning in a landslide?

Fill in the blanks: (Powell):"We cannot accept this result as legitimate because it does not meet international standards and because there has not been an investigation of the numerous and credible reports of fraud and abuse," he said. "It is still not too late for ______ authorities to find a solution that respects the will of the __________ people."

26. The Hypocrisy is Astounding. Sir, where is your sense of humor?
Edited on Thu Nov-25-04 09:34 PM by TruthIsAll
The statements by Powell on the Ukraine elections have to be the most hypocritical ever made by an American government official, considering the timing - right after OUR elections were stolen..
They deserve to be exposed.

I am sorry if you and others here fail to see it that way. I assumed that most would already be aware of the Powell comments. Perhaps I assumed too much. But I could not resist the post.

The stench of our Democracy's corpse is getting to me.

28. I heard it on NPR on the way home
yesterday, and all I could do was say out loud "HALLO, WHAT ABOUT OUR OWN COUNTRY"
When I heard Powell's speech later on I could not believe the hypocrisy.
I thought the post was a good way to show that.
Email it to him!

I canceled my NPR membership last week and made sure to tell them it was because they where not covering the election fraud.

31. That letter is way to accurate but raises a good point.
Why doesn't Europe flat out say they do not accept the results of the U.S. election for the exact same reasons stated by Powell regarding the Ukraine? In fact I think the elected officials of every country should call on the U.S. to investigate the legitimacy of it's election for the exact same reasons that Powell states. I almost think that Powell is trying to give the rest of the world an idea (Hint, Hint)

Powell: 'Fraud and abuse' in Ukraine vote
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Wednesday said the United States does not accept the results of Ukraine's presidential elections as legitimate, citing "credible reports of fraud and abuse."

The country's election commission has declared Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych the winner, beating opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko by three percentage points.

Yushchenko said Wednesday evening that he did not recognize the official result and called for a countrywide "political strike."...
