Sign the Online PETITION for Voter's Bill of Rights
CODEPINK - Women for Peace

Sign and circulate the new Voter Bill of Rights
Our goal is to get 25,000 people to sign the Voter Bill of Rights by November 30, and then send the bill to all members of congress. For that, we need your help.

<http://codepinkalert.org/National_Actions_Voter_Bill_of_Rights.shtml>

From unreliable electronic voting machines and millions of uncounted ballots to partisan secretaries of state and 10-hour waits at the polls, it is clear that our electoral system is in dire need of an overhaul. To build a more just, secure and robust democracy, I support the following 10-point Voter Bill of Rights:

Provide a Voter Verified Paper Trail for Touch-Screen Voting Machines

Create Independent, Non-Partisan and Transparent Oversight

Celebrate Our Democracy: Election Day as a National Holiday!

Maximize Voter Access

Count Every Vote!

Re-enfranchise Ex-Felons

Implement Instant Runoff Voting (IRV)

Provide Public Financing for Elections and Equal Air-Time

Ensure Third Party Candidates Easier Access to the Ballot and Debates

Abolish the Electoral College

11. I signed it, but I'd like us to go further.

Instead of just requiring electronic voting machines to print a paper-ballot, we should get rid of electronic voting machines altogether.

If an electronic voting machine doesn't show all the races, a printer won't help.

If an electronic voting machine breaks down, a printer won't help.

Get rid of electronic voting machines.

Paper ballots, publicly hand-counted.

Inexpensive.

Trustworthy.

Takes less time than designing electronic voting machines, shipping electronic voting machines, testing electronic voting machines, training poll workers on electronic voting machines, etc.

12. Yes I agree with you. However, I think that CODEPINK
has a great organization, a great look to their site and particularly this petition.

Getting the petition in front of Congress is the the primary goal (in my opinion) - the actual 10 or 12-points to place in a Voter's Bill of Rights would likely undergo many evolutions in committee.

But yes, we've got to go back to paper. I'm not a major computer guru, but a computer-based system with central tabulators seems too risky and too tempting to nefarious sorts -- no matter how many supposed safeguards are in place.

16. Sorry this is ALL WRONG

You shouldn't be advancing something without fully understanding the issues here.

PRIMARILY, the problem is in DIGITIZING our votes in such a way that they can be hacked. If there is a problem with the transmission and/or the tabulators, there is a problem with SECURITY.

It's not just about paper trails. You could receive a receipt and STILL the results could be hacked and you'd never ever have a chance to check it out if they skew/hack the results enough so as not to trigger a recount.

There is also a HUGE problem with who is supplying these machines.

Actually, just USING MACHINES us a problem in itself--whether it is touch screen, optical scanners, or the like.

WRONG PETITION.

NEEDS A GREAT DEAL MORE STUDY. If you do not have EXPERTISE in this area (and I suspect that you DO NOT), you shouldn't be proposing ANYTHING. This is a VERY complex issue and it isn't that easily solved.

DEEP SIX THIS PETITION, PLEASE.
