Blackwell is saying that the OHIO taxpayers will be paying for the recount |
|
WTF? I thought variosu groups were taking donations to fund the recount?

1. Cobb had collected money needed for the recount. |

It must not cover everything, I guess. Why is Blackwell so afraid of the recount, I wonder? Hmm?

the cost to the candidate was set in 1956 and hasn't been updated to reflect current expenses.

If the idiots haven't updated their costs, whose fault is that? Maybe Mr. Blackwell should pay the difference.

the glibs are paying the mandated costs. it's not their fault that the mandated costs don't cover the actual expenses.

2. Technically he's correct. It will cost much more than the $10/precint, but |
|
I say that's irrelevant. Is he saying that only rich candidates should be able to obtain justice? Or that because the Greens and Libertarians and public interest groups aren't rich none of the rest of us deserve to know what the actual count is or that we don't care about fraud? His argument was illogical, which is typical unfortunately from what we get from the righty TV set. Warning: Too much Lush will rot your brain.

4. the recount fund was for |
|
the Cobb/Badnarik people to pay (10 dollars a precinct) and to get the Glib volunteer effort together.
What the taxpayers will pay for will be whatever expense of the actual ballot handling. The Glibs (or any people requesting recounts) only get to *observe* the ballots being recounted. Ergo, the counties will have to pay for whatever personnel and supplies they'll need for the recount. According to Ohio law (not that it means much to Blackwell), if the counties can't pay, the cost is passed on to the state.
But it's such a ridiculous argument. Somewhere on DU, I forget where, someone estimated that the actual cost, for the whole state, would be in the area of $125K, I think. The last time they had a recount, in 1991, it cost $73K.
Seems like a small price to pay to ensure democracy is preserved, but hey, what do I know?

9. I've seen estimates that it will cost ... |
|
$1 to $2 million dollars to do an Ohio recount. The requirement for funds to start the recount is about a tenth of that, or $150k.
The money comes out of whatever money is allocated to the electoral funding, doubtless.
At least it'll keep them from buying any more crappy paperless voting machines, if they have to go through with it and it seriously defunds Ken's office and his nest egg. If he hadn't f'd around with the whole electoral process here in the first place, none of this would have happened -- he deserves to have to pinch a couple million out to do this, for all the shystery he committed.
I'm all for looking for silver linings!

18. yeah, why doesn't Kerry pay with that 15 million |
|
he could pay with the money he squirreled away from the campaign. He would have kept it all for his next campaign if Donna Brazile hadn't called him on it. Apparently that money is left over from the PRIMARY, meaning he could have spent it to counter the swift vote garbage in August.

Someone here suggested if they go this route we talk about the costs of Iraq. Pretty outrageous that Blackwell and his buddies are going to the "we can't afford it" routine.

25. Well our local taxpayers had to pay for security when Cheney came to town |
|
so, I ask Blackwell, what's the difference? I would rather pay taxes to make sure the vote was correct then to pay for campaign expenses for someone I didn't support.
