What ever happened with Michael Moore filming polling places in FL and OH?
Michael Moore to film voting
01/11/2004 08:53 - (SA)

Washington - Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore announced that he is dispatching 1 200 people to literally watch the polls in Tuesday's presidential election in the United States.

The volunteers will be outfitted with video cameras to record any irregularities that might occur in the battleground states of Florida and Ohio.

The well-publicised opponent of President George W Bush made the award-winning documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11", which was released this year and bashed Bush and his decision to go to war in Iraq.

In a statement, Moore said he was sending out the observers because he was worried that some voters might be intimidated and their votes suppressed.

Moore has been pretty quiet since the election. Did he mention this on Leno last night?

1. No mention on Leno
Moore was not only clean-shaven and wearing a suit, but he was nearly apolitical. When asked why Bush won, he said, "Because more people voted for him." Then he read a letter from his book of letters from Iraq from an enlisted man about how wonderful Michael Moore was.

Has he joined a cult?

2. Nope- no mention of this or anything about his film crews in Ohio and FL.
But we know they were in both places. I even remember an article from an Ohio paper (read it here at DU) saying that he was there filming away and that the films were to be used "in court".

This is all very bizarre and it sure would be nice to have a hint from MM as to what he is or is not up to...

15. here it is (on page 7)
"A cheer rings out when the cavalry arrives, by tour bus. A roiling mass of boom mics, cameras, and floodlights emerges and lurches toward the school. At the center is filmmaker Michael Moore, a slouching mound of indignation in New Balance sneakers. The General Patton of the Left has come to rouse the troops.

Moore asks for a field report. Grim expressions tell the story. The problem is long lines, one man says. "There's people I personally spoke to who waited three hours to vote."

Moore nods attentively. "Where's our camera?" he barks. "Make sure we get this on camera, 'cause we're not just looking for fraud. We're also looking for ineptitude."

"Are you making a movie about the election?" someone asks.

"The videotape exists as evidence," he says. "It's not to appear in your cineplex. It's to appear in a court of law!"

23. Freddie, what do YOU think is on these tapes?
Another poster already said he had footage on his website at some point. What do you think is on those tapes and what exactly do you want him to do with them?

26. There wasn't one clip of anyone being challenged or being intimidated
So where is the good stuff? The video of the GOP breaking the law? Why is Moore withholding it?

4. I don't understand why everyone wants to make him a hero.
He is first, and foremost, just plain ole MM. He has made millions of dollars on his films and that means he gets to make more movies on subjects that interest him (and make more money).

I met him a few months ago and did not get the impression that he is infused with passion about political issues. He seems a closed system and is amused by things that go on around him. In particular, he seems slightly amused by all the hoopla and is very capable of playing a joke on the country with a new haircut and a suit.

8. But is sitting on evidence of vote fraud and intimidation heroic?
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 09:30 AM by Freddie Stubbs
Benedict Arnold was a hero at one time (Battle of Saratoga). But he later sold out.

by all of the kids dying and getting maimed in an illegal war.

Michael Moore worked his a$$ off and I can not believe how many people are ready to call him a sell out or traitor.

Get a grip. He did a little satire. He uses comedy to advance his political views. For many literally dying because of *'s crusade, he is a hero. He has brought the issue of their suffering the forefront. He showed everyday Americans what the media refused to show.

The joke was on the shrub, but apparently it was on many here also.

Go back and read Michaels Moore's first post "My first thoughts after the election"

19. no problem seito!
:) That article really helped me to know that MM hadn't given up on us. I have a hard time with everyone doubting him - he IS the voice for us, why would he abandon us when we need him most?

Have you all read his books, seen all his movies? He uses satire to beat the beast. Unlike the repubs, MM is intelligent, and everything he does isn't necessarily literal, he knows his supporters have the ability to THINK and interpret meanings that cannot be derived from face value.

Just my two cents.

10. He'll be back
You can bet he will. I think that clean-shaven suit stuff was all a spoof! He's just waiting for the right time. or maybe K/E have asked him to lay low. I remembering hearing on another thread that they (Greens) had video evidence that would be put up as evidence in court..Could it be MM's video??:hippie:

9. Don't get it? The GOP's threat to use "challengers" was a feint...
...to throw off Kerry's legal resources. It now appears that they hacked the machines in 15 or so GOP leaning counties to flip votes from Kerry to Bush instead.

MM's cameras were not in the house when they did the dirty deeds. Alas...his filming effort was for naught.

22. Yes...but no better/ worse than 2000...or...1992 or... 1972.
There will always be GOP BlackOps in any general election. But this year, the stats show that Ohio was "won" by vote swapping in several high GOP counties, which had both the motive and opportunity to switch totals on the central tabulators.

What else explains the "Terror Lockdown" in Warren County?

20. It probably acted as a deterrent more than anything else.
I think where there were video cameras, the more blatant voter supression tactics may have been thwarted. Of course, even 1200 volunteers is not very much, and there's so much that video cameras can't catch. I don't think there's any shortage of evidence of voter suppression. The long lines of voters were widely reported even if the correlation between wait time and precinct demographics was ignored (i.e. longer lines in poorer, more minority-heavy areas). I think it's a good thing that video cameras were employed, and I'm sure MM will provide any footage if asked to do so, but I don't really think he captured anything like an evil, mustache-twirling election official putting up "whites only" and "colored" signs above the voting booths.

24. Tom Brokaw
Does anyone else thing that this:

.... And if a huge story breaks, "I'll report for duty" ...

is a not-so-veiled reference to John "Reprting for Duty" Kerry , and his possible win of an Ohio recount ?!? Tom knows what's up.

Brokaw Ends 'Nightly News' Anchor Role

By FRAZIER MOORE, AP Television Writer

NEW YORK - Tom Brokaw ends almost 23 years at the anchor desk Wednesday night, as he signs off "NBC Nightly News" for the last time.

Making good on an exit plan announced in May 2002, Brokaw, 64, is stepping away from daily journalism to pursue his varied other interests, including more time on his Montana ranch. But his NBC association will continue under an agreement to host at least three documentaries a year.

And if a huge story breaks, "I'll report for duty," he told The Associated Press recently. "It doesn't mean I'll go back to what I did before. They'll have to find a new role for me."
