Irregularities in the 2003 KY Gov' race? What machines used?
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 03:53 PM by jamboi
Anybody know about any incidents of election irregularities in 2003 KY Gov race? Does anyone know what kind of machines (or other voting techniques) were used? We're looking for similar patterns as occured in OH 2004. ie. it may (along w/ CA 2003 Gov Gov recall) have been a test case for 2004.

Please post here.

GOP Plans to Steal KY Governor's Race through Intimidation of Black Voters
24-Oct-03
Stolen Election 2003

"Jefferson County Republicans intend to place Election Day challengers at 59 voting precincts in predominantly black neighborhoods, a move that NAACP leaders yesterday called blatant intimidation. The GOP election workers, most of whom live outside the targeted precincts in western and central Louisville, Portland and Newburg, will be on hand to challenge voters who they suspect aren't eligible... Those challenged must sign an oath swearing they are valid voters. Anyone who refuses won't be allowed to vote unless an election officer decides the challenge is unwarranted... Democrats called the Republican challengers an attempt to intimidate black voters in what is expected to be a close race for governor between Ernie Fletcher, a Republican, and Democrat Ben Chandler. '(They) have only one purpose: to intimidate and suppress votes in the West End and other minority areas,' Tim Longmeyer, chairman of the Jefferson County Democratic Party, said." Defeat ALL Republicans!

DOJ ACTIONS ON ELECTION LAW BENEFIT REPUBLICANS
http://www.southernstudies.org/reports/DOJVotingRights2.pdf
"In another ballot security program during Kentucky’s 2003 gubernatorial election, Republican efforts to challenge alleged vote fraud in predominantly black precincts in Louisville so enraged African Americans that black political leaders redoubled their get-out-the-vote efforts, and voter turnout surged in the precincts under observation. The heavy black turnout helped Democratic candidate Ben Chandler carry Louisville’s Jefferson County, while Republican candidate Ernie Fletcher won the state as a whole. Observers from both parties found nothing out of the ordinary in black Louisvillians’ efforts to cast their ballots."

26. Jefferson County used Diebold machines
http://www.ruminatethis.com/archives/cat_voting.html
ELECTION 2003 RESULTS á la DIEBOLD - Some interesting facts: Kentucky, which elected Republican Ernie Fletcher as governor by a 10-point margin, uses Diebold election machines (including touch pads) in Jefferson County (~17% of total state population) exclusively. Take note that Jefferson County had given a 51.3%/48.6% edge to incumbent Democrat A.B. Chandler.

12. I think it's interesting work...
...but is there something specific we might look for? For instance, Russians with access to the polls? Did we even find that in 2004 in the four states Madsen called out?

I mean, in general, it fits the pattern, obviously, but maybe there are some significant details he's looking for?

Especially in
Paducah, and Owensboro, Jefferson County.

"Fletcher carried traditionally Democratic areas such as Paducah, where President Bush campaigned with him Saturday, and Owensboro.

He held Chandler to small margins in areas crucial to Democratic victory. The greatest example was Jefferson County, which Chandler had hoped to carry by at least 12,000 votes, but where his margin was only 5,536."

18. Fletcher's platform includes cleaning up election fraud
http://www.nogw.com/electionfraud.html
Fletcher's platform includes cleaning up election fraud:

"• Push for an end to the dispute over public financing of gubernatorial elections, then clean up state law to reflect that policy.

• Push for more frequent disclosure of contributions to statewide candidates.

• Clean up the eligibility rules for running for office, rules that derailed Fletcher's first running mate, Hunter Bates.

• Push for tougher punishment of those guilty of election fraud, perhaps by invoking civil penalties (which are easier to come by) in addition to criminal charges, which require an aggressive attorney general and/or federal prosecutor.

• Increase voter turnout, perhaps by creating a non-profit group (along the lines of Babbage's Democracy Inc.) to raise money and come up with ideas."

20. Things that make you say hmmmm...
U.S. Rep. Ernie Fletcher was elected Kentucky's governor yesterday, ending 32 years of Democratic control of the executive branch and largely completing a 10-year Republican takeover of the state's political system.

In unofficial returns, with all precincts reporting, Fletcher had 55 percent of the vote to 45 percent for Attorney General Ben Chandler, a Democrat who was burdened by the scandals of Gov. Paul Patton.

Fletcher carried traditionally Democratic areas such as Paducah, where President Bush campaigned with him Saturday, and Owensboro.

He held Chandler to small margins in areas crucial to Democratic victory. The greatest example was Jefferson County, which Chandler had hoped to carry by at least 12,000 votes, but where his margin was only 5,536.

Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 09:44 PM by jamboi
FOR THE DUers: What was the role of Kentucky right wing fundamentalists in vote rigging there in last year's Governor race and could they have gone across into southern Ohio to perform the same vote manipulation? Five Star Trust represents $3 billion taken out of the Philippines by Marcos in the late 80s and which wound up in a Houston tranche for the use of the GHW Bush and GW Bush campaigns. A bit of a quiz: Good students of WW II history will figure out where the "Five Star" comes from. Since the late 80s, Five Star Trust has been infused with money from the Saudis and leftover off shore cash from Enron.

35. KY is a hotbed of militia activity
and as I'm researching the right wing extremist role in the election, come to find out that there's a contingent of the "Moorish" sovereign citizens in Cuyhoga County. These are people with the same basic tactics as the sovereign citizens, but they're Black. They'd certainly be perfect ones to operate in the Black neighborhoods without getting much attention. Might also account for the unusually large number of Peroutka/Badnarik votes there.

I know it's an aside... but I found it extremely interesting. Will look for more KY stuff soon.
