Demo State Rep lost by 235 votes Asks for Recount after realizing there we
Were irregularities

Local election officials denied improprieties in the Nov. 2 vote, saying any problems stemmed from heavy turnout. In Peoria, which makes up more than three-fourths of the district, 72 percent of registered voters cast ballots.

Schock, president of Peoria's public school board, did not immediately return a call for comment Tuesday.

Slone supporters contend irregularities included election judges who asked far more minority voters for identification than whites, and a system of handing out provisional ballots that forced some voters to wait 45 minutes or more to vote.

"I think putting all this together points to a pattern of deliberate voter suppression aimed primarily at Democratic voters, especially newly registered voters, the poor and African-Americans," Slone said.
