>Former CIA Director George Tenet on Wednesday said greater government regulation of the Internet and telecommunications networks is needed in order to guard against terrorist attacks.

snip

>"I know that these actions would be controversial in this age where we still think the Internet is a free and open society with no control or accountability," he added. "But, ultimately, the Wild West must give way to governance and control."

Many national media outlets were not allowed to attend Tenet's speech. The Associated Press reported that Tenet insisted that natoinal media be kept out, only allowing in reporters for trade publications that cover the government.

1. Thanks for the cross post
and govexec.com is an excellent resource for keeping up on these things (on the left hand column is a breakdown of news areas like defense, outsourcing, etc)

4. Resurrect Fidonet?
We may have to go back to loosely-networked semi-autonomous BBS systems like Fidonet, where instead of being constantly interconnected forums are updated by systems dialing each other overnight.

It would be prudent to have software installed for this on a number of volunteer systems, just in case the Net does get substantially shut down after another terrorist scare.

Or is the commercial use of the Net now so huge in the economy that it will have to stay up, and the only trick we need to learn is stealthy, encrypted communication?

9. What exactly is Orwell's relationship between rebellion and consciousness
that would lead him to that conclusion?

6. This is HORSESH*T
The Internet is global... terrorists don't need a connection to charter.net to communicate.

Start using RSA to encrypt your communications... (though it wouldn't surprise me if the gov has a massively parallel system that can crunch out a matching 128-bit prime to a public key in under an hour).

Before you know it we'll be
Using old techniques,
Silly as they may be, to
Hide our true messages
So no one can
Understand your message
Xcept those who know how your encoding it.

7. There is no secure form of communication,
whether it be smoke signals, someone whispering in your ear, or coded messages. One possible exception may be ESP, but I suspect that only a handful of people would be doing all the communicating.

8. It seems reasonable to at least think about how regulation would
provide advantages/disadvantages.

I can't even begin to think of a scheme but I won't rule it out completely. I for one would like to be able to use a search engine without always finding porn - then again it does come in handy occassionally:) But I guess the Internet can refine itself in the future for such purposes.

Dunno...do know that a discussion about it can't hurt too much.
