'Bourne' Director Working on Alan Moore's 'The Watchmen'
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - British filmmaker Paul Greengrass, who shot the summer hit "The Bourne Supremacy," is set to direct "The Watchmen," a project based on the seminal DC Comics limited series of the same name.

Darren Aronofsky ("Pi") had been attached to direct the Paramount Pictures project but bowed out because of scheduling conflicts. He is shooting "The Fountain," starring Hugh Jackson.

snip..........

With Greengrass aboard, the project is now eyeing a possible 2006 release date. Greengrass, known for his gritty style, also wrote and directed the critically lauded Irish saga "Bloody Sunday."

Number one: It is called 'Watchmen', not 'THE Watchmen'. There is no definite article.

Number two: Yahoo fucking 'News', it's Dave Gibbons not Dave Gibbon. How fucking hard is it to do decent research now that we have Google?

Number three: Please, please don't make this movie, because it'll suck. I love Watchmen too, and I don't want to see it turned into a Hollywood turd. But like all the worst ideas in Hollywood, I guess it's gonna happen.

When Moore let them make From Hell, he essentially gave them the name and then said "do whatever you want with it" - he washed his hands of the movie from the very start. I'm presuming - and in fact hoping - that he'll do the same with this, then I won't feel a need to pay any attention to it.

Everybody who is remotely interested in any form of visual art NEEDS to read Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. Loads of my friends and family have read it and loved it, and none of them are particularly interested in comics. The book makes you realise that comics are NOT just 'films on paper' - they have their own language. Okay, dumb action comics make good dumb action movies - but for artists who really make the most of the medium, it's idiocy to assume that the work will translate to film. Watchmen has a unique visual ethos that will be totally lost on screen.
