All the big pop acts of that era have become victims of celebrity culture. Britney is probably sunk for good. Christina's sex image just looks pathetically fake. The boy-band founder Lou Pearlman is rotting away in jail for his Ponzi schemes that ripped investors off for nearly half a billion dollars. About the only heartthrob of the late '90s that is still going strong is Justin Timberlake, mainly because he embraced a grittier, sexualized image of the twentysomething man who likes to party. He's actually someone who young adult guys can identify with. A lot of the same dudes who cursed out NSYNC ten years ago when they were 13 actually like some of Justin's songs now that he's a "legit" musician.
