X-Files. some spoilers here so beware
A group of 8 of us went last night - age range of 20 to retirement.
we all left with a feeling something was missing and that we were a bit cheated.

average out of 10 rating was 6.5

was great to see Scully and Mulder again, no doubt, but Chris Carter can do better than this for a plot!
I could easily overlook that there were no extraordinary cgi moments and that the limited locations fit in more with it being a play rather than a movie, but the eye candy wouldn't have been seen as lacking if there was a more interesting story.

There were many more tv episodes that were 10 times plus better than this movie. I wish they would stick to the conspiracy/alien plots - where Carter shines.

argh.

1. thanks for the review
I agree with you about Carter. He's at his best when he's doing the conspiracy/alien stuff.

Guess I'll wait until I see this in the $6.99 bin.

2. That's too bad.
I've been watching DVDs of the first season and notice that sometimes his story lines are left with incomplete conclusions and sometimes they don't make sense even within the framework of horror and fantasy. Maybe this is his way of leaving an unsolved mystery to be picked up some other day. One thing about the first season is that there wasn't a feeling of limited locations. Although I know it was filmed mostly in Washington state and British Columbia, there was always the feeling that you were where they said you were whether Washington, D. C., Iowa or the southwest. He really should have opted for a dynamite story though even if he was limited in sets and locations.

3. the sets and locations limits
hardly entered as a criticsim in the tv series. It just didn't matter because the stories were usually so rich.

but it kind of stuck out like a sore thumb at the theatre - I suppose because there was Some Kind of Expectation that it would stand out in some way. and it didn't. :(

4. We saw it today - would give it a 7
We thought the end was fine because it leaves the whole saga open for another X files movie.

I'm glad I went. :hi:

5. I've changed my rating for this one to a 5 or less.
Just rewatched the first movie and it's miles better.
Carter must have had a contract to half heartedly fulfill or something - the calibre is dismal compared to the first one.

6. It sucked so much I was actually angry.
I adored the series, and was a total fanatic about it. I went to the conventions, and bought the series DVDs. What a serious disappointment. My film group, whom I convinced to go, spent the post-film dinner taking apart the idiotic plot. I had absolutely nothing to say in defense because they all had a point.

7. i couldn't wait until it was over

I only stayed because I had a ton of respect for the original series.

When were Mulder & Scully ever a couple? I never really watched the last couple of seasons, but I thought Mulder wasn't in there. All of a sudden, in the middle of this movie, with no warning , they wake up in bed together, kissing. I don't mean to be childish, but, Ewwww.

I thought the whole point was that Mulder was protective of Scully because she was like a sister, and he has issues because his real sister disappeared.

This movie was just piss poor, and it seemed like the sci-fi element was just in there because it had to be. Most of the movie dealt with faith, and belief and right and wrong.

I had a thought that when Scully was yelling at Moulder, that it was really the writers lecturing me because I need to grow up and get out of the 90's, almost like in Juno (spoiler), when Jennifer Garner told Jason Bateman that his shirt was stupid, only that was done well.

9. They had a 99% platonic relationship in the TV show, the whole romantic thing was...
...more of a nod to those of us who wanted them to get together. This is called "shipping" in TV show circles. When it happens things tend to go to shit. And frankly it seemed like they were a first time couple with all the irrelevant 'problems' they were facing. So it remains true, when two characters on a show get together (whom weren't together to begin with) it never works!

Take Fraiser for another example.

8. I'm late to this thread. Had been looking for some talk about this
movie. All I can say is that when it was over, some guy in the audience said "Damn, that sucked." Ha! It was great seeing Mulder and Scully again, but how about actually giving us a storyline next time. Uh, don't think there will be a next time.

It was great seeing them again, though.

10. Aww, I thought it had the exact sort of ambigious storyline that X-Files was famous for...
...the problem is that they didn't tie it up well at all, and it felt quite drawn out with the back and forths about how Mulder was "obessing." Hello! That's Mulder!!

It could've easily been cut down and made into an hour long show no doubt.
