Vatican 'forgives' John Lennon
Vatican 'forgives' John Lennon

By David Willey
BBC News, Rome

At the time radio stations banned their music and concerts were cancelled

A Vatican newspaper has forgiven the late English singer John Lennon for saying four decades ago that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus.
In an article praising The Beatles, L'Osservatore Romano said Lennon had just been showing off.
Lennon told a British newspaper in 1966 - at the height of Beatlemania - that he did not know which would die out first, Christianity or rock and roll.
At the time, the comparison sparked controversy in the US.
The semi-official Vatican newspaper marked the 40th anniversary of The Beatles' "White Album" with an article praising Lennon and the Fab Four from Liverpool.
Youthful joke
The paper dismissed Lennon's much-criticised remark that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ as a youthful joke.

2. At least they're getting quicker about these apologies. It wasn't until 1992
that Pope Paul II apologized for the Galileo affair.

...(when still with us) over the Vatican's "anger" w/his comments. :eyes:

Does the Vatican have nothing better to do, than sit around and think of people and situations to "forgive"?
What...did they run out of ways to declare it holy and sacred to control women? Just because they are considered the supreme, all mighty, high holy dudes in their corner of the religious world, doesn't mean the world at large gives a flying *!#*, what the hell they choose to forgive, and when.

4. Yeah, what a load of shit that whole thing was. MILLIONS of dumb-asses didn't get what
he really meant - he wasn't 'dissing' Jesus whatsoever - he simply meant 'I can't believe we're so insanely popular - it's ridiculous!'. I actually had to tell a woman who was emailing me to take me off of her list because she forwarded two things (over a period of time, not at once) that mentioned that 'incident'...
