It's not done for the good of the people. It's done for ratings and money, like any show. If something good comes of it that's great, but I wouldn't bet on that being their real motive. I think shows like this exploit people far more than help them. If I thought they were driven by purely altruistic reasons I'd be all for it.
And aside from this particular story, I also find the fascination with celebrities personal lives to be voyeuristic to the extreme at times. It's fine when people have a little interest in the stars they like off screen. That's normal and understandable. But these shows take it so much further that it borders on creepy at times, and I wonder about some of the people who follow these celebrities that closely, and if they're just living through them to make up for something lacking in their own lives. I feel this way whether we're talking movie stars, sports figures, music stars, whatever.
That's just me though. Your mileage may vary. :)
