Coraline was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. |
|
And I've seen a most of the well known of scary movies out there, including the Silence of the Lambs series, the Scream series, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Series, Event Horizon, 28 Days Later, etc. I've even seen the lame ones like The Ring and Blair Witch Project.
But last night I saw Coraline in 3D. Though it didn't have any blood or gore, it frightened me on a level like no other movie has. The Other Mother chilled me to the bone from the first moment I saw her. IMO she put the Joker and Hannibal Lecter to shame.
I'm curious about your reactions.

I took my little brother to see it. I wish we could have seen it in 3D.

2. I was slightly drunk at the beginning of the film. It made the 3D effects even more powerful |
|
I didn't think it was as scary as the movie "Brazil", but it was scary. Especially for kids.

3. I was more mesmerized than scared. |
|
I saw it twice.
IMO Silence of The Lambs was a thousand times more frightening.

4. I am still working up the courage to see The Strangers |
|
It reminds me of how I used to get the creeps whever I went to Northern MI or anywhere in the rural South.

8. Don't bother, The Strangers is just plain bad... |

Not even the gratuitous gore is good. See Funny Games if you want to be completely freaked out by a movie. Or perhaps you shouldn't.

15. Funny Games was a huge disappointment to me |
|
Bored the fuck out of me. The over acting was extremely distracting from whatever freakiness the movie was trying to convey.

Although it wasn't in 3d, I was thinking that it might've detracted from the impact. It was very suspenseful, and moody. At first you are so down for Coraline, because her life seems so gray, and then excitement and color just blooms and blossoms everywhere. It was hard for me to be too scared, because the asthetics(sp?) just blew me away. If it doesn't win for best art direction, at least for next year's awards, I give up on thye academy!

11. Quite the contrary, I saw it in 2D first and 3D second |
|
The 3D made it seem like I was in Coraline's world. The effect certainly wasn't a gimmick, it truly added to the experience.

9. I'd been waiting for this movie to come out! |
|
I too was more mesmerized than scared. It's all stop-motion animation, no computer generated stuff. I liked that it didn't pander to kids the way the pixar movies do. They have become so formulaic.

10. Loved it. And the 3D worked really well with the film. |
|
My 10 year old was mesmerized as well but not scared at all. We both thought it was dark, but in a fun, thank-god-it's-sort-of-just-a-nightmare way.

It certainly didn't scare me.
I was a bit underwhelmed, but I might like it better after a second viewing.

13. I enjoyed it. For me it was more clever and interesting |

than a lot of the animation out there. The theme was interesting as well.

but it wasn't any scarier than The Nightmare Before Christmas or Spirited Away, two other beautifully animated films. The scariest thing was Coraline's friend's sideways-leaning head. The two "actress" neighbors were downright hilarious.

19. Coraline's friend Wybie |
|
His posture reminded me of Heath Ledger as the Joker! I saw it in 3-D and really enjoyed this film!
