San Diego gay rights organization The Empowering Spirits Foundation is demanding an apology from a contestant on the new season of CBS’ Big Brother for an angry, homophobic tirade that was seen by viewers of the show’s 24-hour internet feed.
Contestant Jeff Schroeder’s “anti-gay slurs are extremely insensitive and foster a climate of hatred and intolerance toward the LGBT community,” said A. Latham Staples, the group’s executive director. “Schroeder works in advertising, and he should know that the use of these defamatory remarks are dehumanizing and can have a negative impact on an impressionable audience.”
Staples is also calling on CBS to refrain from airing the clips of the tirade on its television program and urges bloggers and media outlets to not repeat the slurs in coverage of the incident. (Ed. note: It is abOUT’s policy not to refrain from providing readers with any information that provides important information to the story.)
During the feed, Chicago ad salesman Schroeder slurs bodybuilders Russell and Jessie in a profanity-laced tirade after Russell mocked him for being a “dumbass.”
“Way to show your true colors, fag,” said Jeff to which Russell replied: “Hey, why do you hate on gay people, one? Why do you hate on gay people? If you want to call me a bitch, call me a bitch, but that’s just kind of stupid.’
Jeff replied, ‘That is pretty much calling you a bitch, man, gay people.’” He later said “fuck you, you fucking homo faggot,” and later, “You fucking jealous fags.”
CBS has not commented on the tirade, though it will probably not make it on the live broadcast.
