John 'Marmaduke' Dawson dies at 64; founder of New Riders of the Purple Sage

With John Dawson as the lead singer, the New Riders of the Purple Sage released eight albums on Columbia Records from 1971 to 1976.
'The original psychedelic cowboy band' was the Grateful Dead's opening act from 1969 to 1971, then became successful touring on its own.

John "Marmaduke" Dawson had original tunes in his pocket and a guitar in his hand in 1969 when a buddy just learning to play pedal steel guitar often joined his weekly gig at the Underground, a Bay Area hofbrau house.

The friend was Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, and those sessions set the stage for the New Riders of the Purple Sage, a group they considered "the original psychedelic cowboy band."

8. well, you were lucky to have parents with a good album collection.
About once every other year my mother would treat herself to a Mitch Miller record.

3. John was also Bartholomew Bear of 'The Rockabyes' band at Kidzter.com
Maria Muldaur and Marty Balin are also part of the kidsong group.

Kidzter.com is a cute site that my little girl recently found - great for rocking parents and grandparents to share with their little ones.

I'm glad that some of John and ALL these great talents will still be around...even for the NEXT generation.

4. Aw, damn!
I played "Powerglide" so much I almost wore it out. I loved that album!

Wishing you dim lights, thick smoke, and loud loud music. RIP.
