Accused witch gives birth while being hung from tree
A pregnant Papua New Guinea woman hung from a tree after being accused of sorcery gave birth to her baby while struggling to free herself, local media reports.

Nolan Yekum and her husband Paul were dragged from their house and hung from a tree by fellow tribesmen who accused them of sorcery after the couple's neighbour suddenly died.

Their ordeal occurred in Kilip village near Banz in Western Highlands Province, PNG's newspaper The National reported today.

The woman and her newborn baby girl, her third child, were doing well in Mt Hagen Hospital after two weeks in hiding, the report said.

1. And if the fundies get their way
Expect that to start happening here- except that it won't just be "witches"- it will be liberals too.

3. The last line of the article is the kicked
The couple vehemently denied practising sorcery

What the hell? They have to deny that they're witches? Good grief, I'm glad that at least in this society we have enough respect and knowledge of science and reality so that we're not accusing one another of being witches.

4. Many people of our society pay others to be "witches", in a sense.
In a homogenized, mass marketed for the Western New Age sense.
Divination, Astrology, Salvationist Religion <- all thriving businesses.

Take Edgar Cayce.org, for example. Then, please reconsider your statement "...at least in this society we have enough respect and knowledge of science and reality...".

5. Yes, but that is different.
We're not going out to kill Sylvia Browne for practicing witchcraft. While bilking consumers out of money is a bad thing, it's not quite on the same par as murder.

6. Our society has that murder problem licked, eh?
Edited on Mon Mar-03-08 02:12 AM by greyl
And there definitely aren't any murders committed because of some wrongheaded or supernatural beliefs?

8. Not to kick you when you're on the floor, but aren't there people who think Sylvia is truly evil?
In our society, there are those that know she's full of shit.
There are those that believe her and think she's either Angelic or a Godsend.
Then, there are maybe several hundred fundy others that would hang her from a tree if they had the opportunity and thought they could get away with it.

9. I don't know about "truly evil"
I think that's a bit much. I think she's a fraud and a swindler who probably deserves to see the inside of a jail cell at some point. I think the thing about most critical thinking in general is that it's sort of at odds with the idea of settling your disputes with violence. You don't see scientists gunning each other down in the streets because their research is at loggerheads, after all.

10. Calling her evil is a bit much for you and me, but there are those in our society
who believe her bullshit and think it's evil, right?

Subject: psychics

Question
Is it wrong or sinful to watch a psychic on TV like Sylvia Brown on the Montel Williams Show? I want to know what the Bible says about people such as her and where to find it in the Bible. She proclaims to have her gift of psychic sight from God. I can't say I believe her or anything I just like to watch her , but if it is a sin to do so I would like to know it. That Edwards man can be entertaining also. If they are not God given talents Why are they not scarred of God's judgement? Blessings to you and Thanks J

Answer
Jainee,

Thanks for that question. Let is look at scriptures.

Deuteronomy 18 : 9 - 14
9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. 10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. 13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God. 14 For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.

The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.

There seems to be no tollerance for such behavior, and I do not believe that CHrist is honored by you watching such things on TV.

In Christ

15. Hasn't the US killed about a million Iraqis after some superstitious nonsense about WMDs?
Lynch mobs, of course, are notoriously dishonest: whether it's I bet she has tasty brains so let's accuse her of being a witch so we can kill her and eat her or Gosh they have a nice farm so let's accuse them of poisoning the neighbors so we can burn them and take over their fields or Hey it looks like they've got so really sweet oil so lets accuse them of building nukes and bomb them into the stone age
