4. It's not mine, alas
I really wish I could take credit for it. The image is at www dot suyka dot com slash atheist dot jpg (Sorry for the spelled out text, but otherwise the board converts things to a URL.)

3. I wish I knew where this quote came from
"Good men do good things and bad men do bad things, but to make good men do bad things requires religion."

6. Steven Weinberg
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

7. Thank you!
I knew I was paraphrasing. If I'd remembered it correctly, I would have searched for the attribution.

Thanks again!

5. Buddhists believe you should treat all other sentient beings as though they were your loving Mother
Xings don't have a monopoly on compassion.. the world isn't an inherently evil place

9. Wrong.
The a-theist golden rule is:

Growl... I'm going to sacrifice your babies in the name of genocidal science bru-ha-ha-ha-ha. To be accompanied by a snarling Mr. Hyde looking scientist with fangs and slobber and a neanderthal forehead

That's true 100%!

10. That's the one we use for propaganda purposes
The one I've linked in is the real one we use among ourselves. :hi:

11. I don't think it's a coincidence...
that the sign doesn't mention actually doing something GOOD for other people.

:)

12. Actually, the Christian version doesn't either -
since you're splitting hairs.

Matthew 7:12
"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."

I suppose you could argue that there are other phrases that are more specific, but the "Golden Rule" is based on the statement above, not the other phrases. If you need to include the other stuff, then it would be fair to ask the Atheists' for their sub-text, also.

Otherwise, we're playing only with the most widely accepted "major" phrase, right?

13. Ding. In addition the original 'golden rule' is rather stupid
Treating others as you would be treated is stupid. Others don't necessarily like being treated the way I like to be treated.
It SHOULD be
Treat others as THEY would have you treat THEM.

Except like most 'rules' thats way to general because there are other times when you need to ignore that as well.
