He does not believe what he is saying, he just needs those people in order to survive. The same way that Shaman/Preachers/Priest manipulate and use people emotionally and financially.

The original series was very blatantly about Mormonism.

I'm wondering if the big surprise at the end of the new series will be that they've been Mormons all along.
