I wonder ... how many pastors of snake-handling white churches
are calling Rev. Wright insane?

1. My "white" pastor doesn't get involved in politics.
Seriously. I don't even know if he's a democrat or a republican.

I like it that way.

5. My "white" pastor has said she would not talk politics in the church,
but if you want to talk politics meet her in the parking lot.
By the way, I meet her at a peace rally, so guess which way she leans?!?

2. Most pastors I know keep church and state separate
In my Order, we are required to do so, which is why I don't ever speak as a representative of it when on this board, but rather as an individual.

I feel VERY uncomfortable when ANYONE gets political from a pulpit.

3. Ditto...
I don't attend a church where political issues come up.

Though I am sure that there are some pastors who are railing against him. Probably very conservative pastors.

4. I've been wondering how many people out there in all kinds of churches have
heard, either from their leaders or from other members of the congregation, statements nearly as inflammatory as Wrights.

6. Snake handlers have to exist under the radar
and tend to be completely unworldly, not taking an interest in politics or the antics of black ministers trying standup.

Snake handling churches are still illegal, even though few states will prosecute them when someone gets bitten and dies.

7. My first college roommate went to one of those churches growing up.
She finally admitted it about halfway through the year when she knew she could trust me with that info. She made it sound like it was rarely done and usually done as part of a mystic experience. I doubt her pastor would've paid attention or cared about what was on the news, as remote as their church was in the hills of Kentucky.

8. That's been my experience with them, as well
The snake ceremonies don't happen every Sunday in most of them. They're special occasions, although how it's decided upon is beyond my knowledge.

I do know they have great music, sort of gospel on acid.

(I was a sneaky kid who hid outside and listened)
