Muslim charity founder gets year in prison for lying

Braintree, Mass.-

A Braintree man has been sentenced to a year in federal prison and fined $10,000 for lying to a FBI agent about his travels to Afghanistan.

Libya-born Emadeddin Muntasser, 43, and two co-defendants were convicted on Jan. 11 of conspiracy to dupe the United States government into awarding their Boston-based organization, Care International Inc., tax-exempt status by hiding its pro-jihad activities.

To the Haitian community in Boston, Muntasser was a tireless humanitarian devoted to raising money for hospitals and schools, but during a trial that began on Nov. 13 in U. S. District Court in Boston, prosecutors painted a different picture of him.

A jury found Muntasser guilty of tax code violations, making false statements, and conspiracy to defraud the United States, but citing flimsy evidence, U. S. District Court Judge F. Dennis Saylor tossed out on June 3 his most serious convictions.
