Praying for Election Day Miracles
Edited on Sun Nov-02-08 07:11 AM by TomClash
Source: MSNBC

They're fasting on the steps of the Florida Capitol, hoping God will hear their pleas to put an abortion opponent in the White House.

Prayer warriors will staff the get-out-the-vote command center Tuesday at Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in Fort Washington, Md. A rabbi is distributing a prayer to be said in the voting booth. Prayer circles are seeking courage and protection for Barack Obama and his family.

The faithful are busy as Nov. 4 nears.

While politicians are making their final pitch to voters, religious Americans from across the political spectrum are appealing to a higher power on the candidates' behalf.

1. AME CHURCH??!! What the heezy is the world coming to?
Black folks praying for the election of a couple of nuts who clearly don't advocate for them. I just don't get it.

3. I believe the parishioners at the A.M.E. church are supporting Barack Obama
It's a get-out-the-vote drive, after all. The article goes on to mention prayer circles for the protection of Barack Obama & his family, so it's not strictly a review of religious repugs.

7. Why would you assume that everyone praying was on the Right?

4. And if Obama wins
I have no doubt they'll accept that as either God's will or proof he doesn't exist after all.

(yeah, I know. It was just a thought. Silly me.)

6. Maybe they'll just think they were out-prayed
Note that people on Obama's side are praying, too...and we tend to believe in a God of Hope.

10. article encourages false equivalency (again)
It equates people on the ultra right who are desperately pleading with a vengeful god to put their candidates into office with the AME people who are praying as a faith community for justice to prevail--and that's not the same thing.

11. After 8 years of RW president, Congress, judiciary...
... and no actual move to overturn Roe v. Wade, I think it is clear that the Republicans don't actually want to overturn it.
It is way too valuable as an election wedge issue. These people are living proof.

Then they are shit out of luck. That's neither of these guys.

The issue is too valuable to... Honestly both parties.

Also, if abortion wasn't banned during eight years of Bush, then it will Never be banned.

13. Does prayer count as "activism"?
I saw an item in the paper today where a religious McCain supporter was saying something like "We're really going all out for McCain. We have several large groups conducting sessions where we pray for him to win."

Wouldn't phone banking and canvassing be more effective?

14. What a job God has
He must be torn between the two. How does God choose between which prayer he will answer. Kinda like a football game, people on both sides praying for a win. Gosh what to do?????

17. a poem from the WWI era:
Gott Straf England
and God Save the Queen
God this, that, and the other thing
"Good God", said God
"I've got my work cut out"

I think that is from Bertrand Russel

16. You know, Phillip II Hapsburg of Spain did the same thing
when he launched the Spanish Armada... and he was convinced god was on his side... the vast marjority of his "Mission for God" went to bottom of the sea or was butchered on the Irish shores.

Of course, these people don't know a jot about history and invoking god in on their side of a fight-all the while claiming they know the mind of god and that what they want is what he wants. They need to pay more attention to getting into the kingdom of god and quit trying to create a kingdom of America.

18. And of course, let's not forget
those brave southern lads fighting in The Lost Cause and praying every day for gawd to help them crush their enemies (i.e. the legitimate government of the United States). That didn't work out so hot either (except for the residents of Atlanta).

19. Not that I haven't been praying myself, but...
if it's an organized group, and the prayer is sanctioned by their church, doesn't that church risk losing its tax-exempt status?

22. I can't decide which is sillier?
Trying to influence an all knowing God or believing that this all knowing God has trouble making up his/her mind. Just keep the faith that God is love and is always doing what's best for us and he/she controls everything, whether we know it or not.

Oh yeah, there is that little problem of Bush being elected twice. Maybe God isn't perfect either or maybe God died?
