Poll question: Which is your favorite sacred phrase?
There are phrases that are sacred to different religions--which is your favorite?

7. I think the answer to that is going to be different for each person
and also, perhaps, different for the individual at different times. I have used all the practices listed, and have found, in general, all give me great peace and sometimes even insight into my life situation. I would say that silence is the most interesting of all the practices, as it is also the most difficult--for you silence not only your mouth but also your mind.

9. I voted for Kyrie Eleison, but I use the Trisagion more along with the Jesus Prayer.
Jesus Prayer:
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me a sinner.

Trisagion (shortened version):
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.

"Kyrie Eleison" does mean "Lord have mercy," but I find that the longer versions work better for me. I do like singing it during Lent and Easter services, though, and I miss it, considering we're in a Russian church now and use Old Church Slavonic instead of the Greek.

12. I'm more of an Agnus Dei guy
In the sense of sung masses that is. But a decent Kyrie is well worth listening to, it's true. Mozart's Requiem's Kyrie is particularly striking. Bugger all of the sacred to my mind of course, but excellent material in the right hands.

22. Hail Mary
Edited on Fri Nov-14-08 10:34 AM by HamdenRice
I did not grow up Catholic, and have no deeply held, early indoctrinated feelings about the "cult of Mary," but for some reason I find "Hail Mary" to be almost hypnotically beautiful and soothing. Maybe it reaches down into some sort of pagan, earth mother worshiping cultural instinct -- the paradoxical idea of "Mother of God" and perhaps most importantly, the meditation that life will indeed end. The prayer is brief, cryptic, mysterious, hypnotic, rhythmic and like all great prayers sounds good even if you didn't know what the words meant.

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of death.

Amen.

23. Since the only sacred thing is no-thing
The only sacred sound must be silence.

I think Simon and Garfunkel wrote a song about it many years ago.

Just the sound of it, as far as I'm aware. :)

Edit: I don't use the phrase as a mantra or chant, if you wanted to know.
