Al-Qaida's Cure For The Economic Meltdown: Convert To Islam
Al-Qaida No. 2 to US: Overcome meltdown with Islam
No. 2 al-Qaida leader says 9/11 attacks caused financial meltdown, urges US to embrace Islam

Talking Points Memo (AP)
Nov 28, 2008 06:44 EST

Al-Qaida's No. 2 leader appeared in a new video posted Friday calling on Americans to embrace Islam to overcome the financial meltdown, which he said was a consequence of the Sept. 11 attacks and militant strikes in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Ayman al-Zawahri, whose 80-minute recording touched on a number of subjects, also lashed out at Afghanistan's government and said any U.S. gains in Iraq will be temporary. Zawahri's new recording came in the form of a question-and-answer session with an off-camera interviewer.

Appearing in a white turban and robe, Zawahri discussed the roots of the U.S. economic crisis. He said it was a repercussion of the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States, and that the crisis would continue "as long as the foolish American policy of wading in Muslim blood continues." "The American economy was afflicted by a downturn and loss of investor confidence in the market following the events of Sept. 11," he said.

"The modern economy has been destroyed by the strikes of the mujahedeen (in Iraq and Afghanistan) and usury," he said, using the Arabic term for holy warriors. Under Islamic Sharia law, usury, like drinking alcohol, is among the grand sins.

- Well, we all know that the old "usury sin" was always relative in its application. Particularly in this case where so many sheiks and potentates from Islamic countries have investments in western banks and investment houses.

And of course the same old usury rag "would apply" to both religious Jewish and Christian investors as well. Since the same prohibitions against it is in their tomes. But it's never bothered them either.

Because who wants to be that religious???

1. Well, I hope he knows where he can go and how he can get there.

10. The place I had in mind...
The 72 virgins wouldn't have anything to worry about in the place I had in mind for this guy. No, there would be 72 angry Virginians waiting for him. You know, guys like George Washington, Richard Henry Lee, Thomas Jefferson, William Henry Harrison, and so on.

2. Hey, it might work
After five decades of using voodoo for the market, maybe it's time to try a new one?

7. Biology would be better
Or, actually, psychology. The market doesn't really follow mathematic principles really well, because it's made entirely of people, and people tend to be fucking insane, thus all your mathematical formulae to determine how the market works goes haywire because some lunatic decides he wants to corner the market on tulip bulbs.

5. So they're saying that the Saudis and Reagan should bail everyone out?
I mean, it's what's worked for them.

6. Yeah, and I'm sure the Saudis....
...will be getting right on it. Just as soon as they recoup their recent losses and then divest themselves of their filthy usury-tainted lucre.

- But don't hold yer breath.

9. The Church used to have laws against usury.
Didn't last long enough.

My problem with this statement is that a guy who only deals with others from his culture and religion is telling a pluralistic society what to do. Big mistake. Telling a nation that has over 10,000 Christian denominations alone, let alone all those of non-faith and other faiths entirely, that a simple conversion to another faith will take care of all of their problems (because, yeah, it's worked so well in Afghanistan :eyes: ) is using reductionism to the extreme. It's beyond silly.

I could tell him that converting to Christianity would keep him from having to run around and change houses and would make the Middle East all happy-happy, joy-joy again, but that wouldn't work, either, and it would just tick him off.

11. Nothing ever goes the way that the extremists expect.
They commit bombings, expecting that it will get people to realize that their way is the only right way, then when the public turns against them for killing innocents, they conclude that everyone who disagrees with them is out of touch and must be dealt with accordingly. They have only one 'solution' to every single problem: more devout religious observance and don't understand that it's not a solution and never will be.

Zawahiri should know this--it happened to him in Egypt.

14. This is why I am not going to convert to radical Islam.
They'd want me to give up lime sherbet. No way in hell I'd ever do that.

They'd want me to stop going to the movies. I am not going to do that either. I will not abandon Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, and Dennis Hopper as Frank Booth in David Lynch's BLUE VELVET for radical Islam.

There's also zippo chance of my tossing out my Lou Reed, Petula Clark, and Duke Ellington CDs. That ain't gonna happen.

And not least, no one in radical Islam has offered any incentive. Even NPR offers a tote bag for donations. Are you telling me if I join radical Islam I don't even get a TOTE bag?

15. One does not "convert" to Islam
one "reverts" to Islam. Islam is often seen by its followers as the natural state of man from which others have diverged. This is a rather important distinction.

16. Islam's preachers on the doors of hell
That is what all Muslim sects call his call to Islam, listen to him and his alqaeda group and they'll lead you directly into hell - it's safer to be an atheist or to worship a rare type of ketchup than go for Any form of Islam he is preaching, teaching or leading.

"Doaah ala abwaab jahanam" exact meaning is "preachers on the doors of hell" - Ayman al-Zawahri sounds more convincing in Arabic but that warning sound much more convincing in Arabic and is better known to.

17. I'd rather be dead then live under Sharia law.
And I do mean that seriously. As a Priestess in my own right, I would not live under the complete and total rule of men. That would be a fate worse then death for me.

18. Strangely, people can see this as a whackjob NOW
...so why do so many people have a problem seeing it as equal whackjobbery when the fundy Xians sell the same thing about their version of desert monotheism being the path to terrestrial success?

And no telling me that YOU personally consider these equal does not refute this. Rick Warren et al are taken seriously in this country by tens or hundreds of millions, likely a majority - and probably seen as nothing more than a self-serving harmless promoter by all but a tiny percentage of the rest who don;t take him seriously.

Yet Zarwahri saying EXACTLY the same thing - that faith and adherence to dogma can solve economic and social problems - is likely to be seen as not just laughably insane but damaging and antagonistic by almost every single American, including I can confidently assert far more than 99% of those who take our own, exact in every detail, parallels as serious and godly.
